Weight-Management Herbal Tea Blend

This blend is traded in the market as a slimming or detox tea, and the first useful thing a supplier can tell a buyer is that the name is a regulatory problem, not a product description. There is no authorised EU health claim for a herbal weight-management infusion; under Regulation (EC) 1924/2006 words like slimming, detox or fat-burning on the pack are health claims requiring authorisation, and claims referring to the rate or amount of weight loss are not authorised at all. Thovek supplies the blend as a food ingredient without claims. What the finished pack says is the brand owner's decision and the brand owner's liability, and that decision should be taken with regulatory counsel before artwork is committed. The blend itself is built on Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze green tea leaf as the base, with a herb fraction of Zingiber officinale Roscoe rhizome, Foeniculum vulgare Mill. fruit, Cymbopogon citratus (DC.) Stapf leaf, Hibiscus sabdariffa L. calyx and Cinnamomum verum J.Presl bark. Ratios are set to the buyer's brief. Because the green tea fraction is the majority component, the blend is released against ISO 11287:2011: water extract not less than 32%, total ash 4–8%, water-soluble ash not less than 45% of total ash, alkalinity of water-soluble ash 1.0–3.0% as KOH, acid-insoluble ash not more than 1.0%, crude fibre not more than 16.5%, total catechins not less than 7%, total polyphenols not less than 11% and a catechin-to-polyphenol ratio of at least 0.5. Methods are ISO 9768, 1575, 1576, 1578, 1577, 15598, 14502-2 and 14502-1, with moisture by ISO 1573. A black or partly fermented base is available instead, released against ISO 3720:2011, which shares the ash and extract limits and substitutes total polyphenols not less than 9%. Two formulation decisions are deliberate. Senna is excluded. Preparations from the leaf or fruit of Cassia senna L. containing hydroxyanthracene derivatives were placed under Union scrutiny in Annex III Part C of Regulation (EC) 1925/2006 by Commission Regulation (EU) 2021/468, that instrument has since been litigated before the EU General Court, and Switzerland has restricted senna in supplements outright — a laxative botanical inside a weight-management tea is a regulatory and reputational exposure the category does not need. Senna-containing versions are made only against a written customer specification. Cinnamon is Ceylon cinnamon, Cinnamomum verum, not cassia: cassia bark runs roughly 2–7% coumarin against 0.004–0.02% for Ceylon, and with EFSA's tolerable daily intake for coumarin at 0.1 mg per kg body weight, the species choice is the difference between a compliant cup and an exceedance. One point in the blend's favour: Commission Regulation (EU) 2022/2340, which restricts EGCG from green tea extracts, expressly excludes aqueous extracts whose reconstituted composition is comparable to a traditional green tea infusion, so a brewed leaf blend of this kind falls outside that restriction — unlike a green tea extract capsule.
