Beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) mineral salts

Beta-hydroxybutyrate is the anion of 3-hydroxybutyric acid, C4H8O3, MW 104.10, PubChem CID 441 — CAS 300-85-6 for the racemate and CAS 625-72-9 (CID 92135, EINECS 210-909-6) for the R-(D)- enantiomer that human metabolism actually produces. The free acid is a hygroscopic liquid and is not a practical ingredient, so it is supplied as a mineral salt. Thovek offers all four: calcium 3-hydroxybutyrate, C8H14CaO6, MW 246.27, CAS 51899-07-1; sodium 3-hydroxybutyrate, C4H7NaO3, MW 126.09, CAS 150-83-4; magnesium 3-hydroxybutyrate, C8H14MgO6, MW 230.50, CAS 586976-57-0; and potassium 3-hydroxybutyrate, C4H7KO3, MW 142.19, CAS 39650-04-9. Choosing between them is a mass-balance exercise, and the numbers decide the label. The BHB anion is 103.10 g/mol, so the salts carry 83.7% (calcium), 81.8% (sodium), 89.5% (magnesium) and 72.5% (potassium) BHB by mass, while delivering 16.3% calcium, 18.2% sodium, 10.5% magnesium and 27.5% potassium respectively. In practice that means one gram of the sodium salt puts 182 mg of sodium onto your nutrition panel — at a 10 g serving of a sodium-heavy blend, the sodium declaration becomes the binding constraint long before the BHB dose does. Magnesium gives the highest BHB payload per gram; calcium is the least soluble and the usual pick for dry sticks and compressed formats. This is a synthetic article made from non-animal feedstock: vegan, vegetarian, non-GMO, halal- and kosher-certifiable, with no milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, gluten, sesame or nut input. The salts are strongly hygroscopic — the sodium and potassium forms especially — so they ship under foil with desiccant and want a dry room on your side. 3-hydroxybutyrate is a ketone body of ordinary human metabolism, produced endogenously when carbohydrate availability falls; that is biochemistry, not a claim, and Thovek makes no therapeutic, disease or weight-loss claim for this ingredient.
