Zinc Sulphate (Monohydrate / Heptahydrate)

Zinc sulphate is the simplest and most economical of the nutritional zinc salts, and it remains the reference form for high-dose and cost-sensitive applications. Thovek supplies the monohydrate (ZnSO4·H2O, CAS 7446-19-7, MW 179.47) as the standard export grade — a white, odourless crystalline powder assaying 99.0–100.5% to USP and carrying 36.1–36.6% elemental zinc, the highest loading of any zinc form in our range. The heptahydrate (ZnSO4·7H2O, CAS 7446-20-0, MW 287.53) is offered where a lower zinc loading, a larger crystal habit or very rapid dissolution is preferred, at approximately 22.7% zinc. Both forms are freely soluble in water and practically insoluble in ethanol; the heptahydrate effloresces in dry air and must be kept in sealed packing. Zinc is an essential trace element and a cofactor for a large number of human enzymes; established nutrient functions include a contribution to normal protein synthesis, normal macronutrient metabolism and the normal function of the immune system. In manufacturing terms, zinc sulphate is chosen where zinc must be delivered cheaply and completely dissolved — oral rehydration salt sachets, wet-granulated tablets, staple-food and flour fortification premixes, and liquid feed supplements. Its low solution pH (4.0–5.6 at 5%) and pronounced astringency mean it is usually coated, encapsulated or paired with a taste-masking system in chewable and beverage formats. It is a permitted source of zinc for food supplements in the EU under Annex II of Directive 2002/46/EC and for the addition of minerals to foods under Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006. Material is supplied in powder or granular form with a standard particle-size profile of at least 99% through 30 mesh and 70% through 200 µm, and can be milled or granulated to a buyer's specification.
