Zinc bisglycinate is an amino-acid chelate in which a single zinc ion is bound by two molecules of glycine through both the amine nitrogen and the carboxyl oxygen, forming two stable five-membered rings (C4H8N2O4Zn, CAS 14281-83-5, also cited as 7214-08-6, MW 213.51). Glycine is the smallest of the amino acids, so the resulting chelate is unusually compact: the anhydrous material carries 30.6% elemental zinc, second only to the sulphate across our zinc range and roughly twice the loading of zinc gluconate. It is a white, free-flowing powder, sparingly soluble in water, soluble in dilute acid, and stable to above 300 °C, decomposing without a sharp melting point.
The chelate is fully formed before it reaches the formulation, so the zinc is not free to react with the tablet matrix or to produce the metallic bite associated with ionic zinc salts. That is why zinc bisglycinate has become a default zinc for gummies and pastilles, effervescent and stick-pack sachets, prenatal and women's ranges, sports blends and clean-label tablets where the ingredient list is itself part of the product proposition. As with any bioavailable zinc source, the mineral contributes to normal protein synthesis, normal macronutrient metabolism, normal fertility and reproduction and the normal function of the immune system. It is a permitted source of zinc both for food supplements under Annex II of Directive 2002/46/EC and for the addition of minerals to foods under Regulation (EC) No 1925/2006.
No USP or Ph. Eur. monograph covers zinc bisglycinate, so Thovek releases it against a documented house specification: chelation confirmed by FT-IR through the shift of the carboxyl and amine bands relative to free glycine, declared elemental zinc by complexometric titration or ICP-OES, free glycine, loss on drying, particle size, residual solvents, heavy metals to ICH Q3D and USP <2232> expectations, and full microbiology. Unbuffered high-zinc chelate and buffered grades at a lower declared zinc are both available, in 80 mesh standard, micronised or granulated particle sizes.
