Sodium molybdate dihydrate, Na2MoO4.2H2O, CAS 10102-40-6, molecular weight 241.9, is the standard nutritional source of molybdenum. The two waters of hydration are not incidental to the specification: they account for the Ph. Eur. loss-on-drying window of 14.0 to 16.0 percent, determined on 1.000 g by drying at 140 C for three hours, and they are why the dihydrate carries about 39.7 percent molybdenum by weight against roughly 46.6 percent for the anhydrous salt, CAS 7631-95-0. Thovek supplies white to almost white crystalline powder or colourless crystals meeting Ph. Eur. content of 98.0 to 100.5 percent on the dried substance, chlorides not more than 50 ppm and heavy metals not more than 10 ppm; ACS and reagent grades assaying 99.5 to 103.0 percent are available where a tighter reagent specification is called for. It is freely soluble in water and gives a distinctly alkaline solution, pH 7.0 to 10.5 at five percent, which matters when it is dosed into a fortification premix or a liquid concentrate alongside acid-sensitive actives. In the diet, molybdenum functions as the metal centre of the molybdenum cofactor used by sulfite oxidase, xanthine oxidase and aldehyde oxidase. The FDA Daily Value for labelling is 45 micrograms, so inclusion rates are microgram-scale and nearly every buyer works with a pre-diluted trituration or a wet-blended trace-mineral premix rather than weighing the neat salt into a batch. Typical destinations are multivitamin-mineral tablets, trace-element premixes for fortified foods and beverages, clinical and enteral nutrition, animal feed premixes and fermentation or cell-culture media. Sodium molybdate (molybdenum VI) is one of the three molybdenum sources listed in Annex II of Directive 2002/46/EC for EU food supplements, alongside ammonium molybdate and potassium molybdate, and it is the form generally chosen where a pharmacopoeial grade is required. The salt is of mineral origin, contains no animal-derived material and is vegan and vegetarian; it is free from milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, gluten, peanut, tree nut and sesame, and is neither bovine, porcine nor marine. Store sealed in a cool dry place - the dihydrate is stable but will cake or lose its water of crystallisation if the liner is left open or the material is over-dried. Certificates of analysis ship with every lot, and kosher, halal, allergen, non-GMO, TSE/BSE and ICP-MS elemental documentation is available on request.
