Magnesium glycinate, more precisely magnesium bisglycinate (CAS 14783-68-7, EINECS 238-852-2, C4H8MgN2O4, molecular weight 172.42), is an amino acid chelate in which one magnesium ion is co-ordinated by two glycine ligands. The fully reacted anhydrous chelate carries approximately 14.1% elemental magnesium in theory and is supplied to a commercial window of 12.8-14.0% Mg. Buyers should note that a large share of material traded as "magnesium glycinate" is buffered with magnesium oxide to raise the declared magnesium to roughly 18-20%; the two are not interchangeable on a label or in a dose calculation, so the intended basis should be fixed in the purchase specification. The chelate is a white to off-white granular or fine powder with a characteristic odour and taste, slightly soluble in water and soluble in dilute acids. Its low reactivity and mild organoleptic profile make it a common choice where high magnesium loading is less important than blend compatibility. Standard granular grade runs at not less than 90% passing 20 mesh with not more than 15% passing 80 mesh, which suits capsule filling and dry blending; finer milled grades are produced where tablet content uniformity or gummy dispersion is the governing constraint. There is no pharmacopoeial monograph for the substance, so it is manufactured and released against an FCC-style in-house specification agreed with the buyer. Packaging: 25 kg net in multi-wall kraft paper bags with a double inner LDPE liner, or 25 kg fibre drums with a food-grade liner.
