Ferrous sulphate is the most widely traded inorganic iron source and the reference material against which other iron salts are costed. Thovek supplies two commercial forms. The heptahydrate, FeSO4·7H2O (CAS 7782-63-0, MW 278.01), is a blue-green efflorescent crystalline solid assaying 99.5-104.5% as FeSO4·7H2O under the USP monograph and carrying 20.1% elemental iron. The dried (exsiccated) grade, essentially the monohydrate FeSO4·H2O (CAS 17375-41-6, MW 169.93), assays 86.0-89.0% anhydrous FeSO4 under USP Dried Ferrous Sulfate, which corresponds to roughly 31.6-32.7% elemental iron and makes it the preferred choice where tablet or capsule fill weight is constrained. Iron is a constituent of haemoglobin and myoglobin and is required for oxygen transport and for a number of iron-dependent enzymes. Ferrous sulphate is accordingly specified in national flour, rice and salt fortification programmes, in oral solid and liquid dosage forms and in animal feed premixes. Buyers should note the material's handling characteristics: the heptahydrate effloresces in dry air and both forms will slowly oxidise to ferric species on exposure to moisture and air, so containers are supplied sealed with an inner liner and should be resealed after part use. The dried grade is materially more stable in dry blends. Both are soluble in water and practically insoluble in ethanol. Every batch is released against a certificate of analysis covering assay, appearance, insoluble substances (not more than 0.05% for the dried USP grade), arsenic not more than 3 ppm, lead not more than 10 ppm and mercury not more than 3 ppm, together with residual moisture and particle size. Third-party testing, heavy-metal reconfirmation and retention samples are available on request.
