Glucosamine sulphate does not survive on its own as a dry powder - the free sulphate salt is deliquescent and breaks down in store - so the article the trade actually ships is a stabilised double salt, and it is one of the two glucosamine salts that dominate the joint category. Where a buyer needs to keep potassium off the label we can supply the sodium chloride double salt instead, molecular weight 573.31, which carries its own residue-on-ignition window of 22.5-26.0% and a sulphate content of 16.3-17.3%. Origin decides the allergen and diet declaration, and the route is stated on every certificate of analysis. The classical process hydrolyses chitin recovered from shrimp and crab shell, which makes the finished powder a crustacean allergen and rules out vegan and vegetarian positioning. The alternative ferments plant-derived glucose with Aspergillus niger and converts the fungal chitin, giving a non-animal, shellfish-free material for vegan programmes and for buyers who want to avoid marine sourcing questions altogether. The two streams meet the same monograph and are chemically the same article; they are not interchangeable on a label. For the formulator the arithmetic matters as much as the chemistry.
