Specifications

Blend compositionGlucosamine salt + chondroitin sulphate sodium + MSM, blended to the customer's ratio. Common daily-dose architecture: glucosamine 1500 mg, chondroitin 1200 mg, MSM 1000–1500 mg.
Glucosamine hydrochlorideCAS 66-84-2, C6H14ClNO5, MW 215.63; USP assay 98.0–102.0%. Equivalent to 83.1% glucosamine base — use this factor for dose conversion.
Glucosamine sulphate saltsGlucosamine sulphate potassium chloride CAS 31284-96-5, MW 605.52, equal to 59.2% glucosamine base; sodium chloride salt CAS 38899-05-7 also available.
Chondroitin sulphate sodiumCAS 9082-07-9, a sulphated glycosaminoglycan from cartilage. USP assay 90.0–105.0% on the dried basis; 90% HPLC food grade is the common commercial specification.
MSM (methylsulfonylmethane)Dimethyl sulfone, CAS 67-71-0, C2H6O2S, MW 94.14. USP assay 98.0–102.0% anhydrous, melting range 108.5–110.5 °C, chromatographic purity NLT 99.8%.
MSM impurity limitsDimethyl sulfoxide NMT 0.1%, any other single impurity NMT 0.05%, total impurities NMT 0.2% (USP). Distilled grade preferred where the DMSO limit is critical.
Appearance and solubilityWhite to off-white free-flowing powder or granulate. Glucosamine salts and MSM are freely water soluble; chondroitin sulphate is highly soluble and markedly hygroscopic.
Crustacean allergenShell-derived glucosamine IS a declarable crustacean allergen (EU 1169/2011 Annex II, US FALCPA). Aspergillus niger fermentation and corn-derived grades are crustacean-free.
Other allergen statusFree from milk, egg, soy, gluten, peanut and tree nut. Shark-sourced chondroitin is a declarable fish allergen; specify the chondroitin species at enquiry.
Dietary and origin statusNot vegan — chondroitin sulphate is animal cartilage and has no vegan equivalent. Porcine grade excluded from halal and kosher; MSM is synthetic and vegan.
Animal by-product controlsBovine chondroitin: cartilage from animals passed fit for human consumption, with BSE/TSE country-of-origin certification supplied per consignment.
Regulatory statusGlucosamine HCl and glucosamine sulphate KCl from Aspergillus niger are authorised novel foods in Great Britain for food supplements and sports nutrition uses.
Blending and dosage formBlended under controlled humidity with particle sizes matched to prevent press segregation. Powder, direct-compression granulate, capsule fill, stick pack and film-coated tablet.
Shelf life, storage24 months unopened below 25 °C and 60% RH; hygroscopic, keep sealed with desiccant once opened.

This is a formulated article, not a chemical, and each of the three actives has its own identity, its own pharmacopoeial control and its own allergen consequence. Glucosamine is supplied as one of three salts: glucosamine hydrochloride, CAS 66-84-2, C6H14ClNO5, MW 215.63, which is 83.1% glucosamine base and assays 98.0–102.0% to USP; glucosamine sulphate potassium chloride, CAS 31284-96-5, MW 605.52, which is 59.2% glucosamine base; or glucosamine sulphate sodium chloride, CAS 38899-05-7. Chondroitin sulphate sodium, CAS 9082-07-9, is a sulphated glycosaminoglycan isolated from cartilage and is controlled by the USP monograph at 90.0–105.0% on the dried basis; bovine trachea is the standard raw material, with porcine, avian and shark grades also on the market. MSM is methylsulfonylmethane, or dimethyl sulfone, CAS 67-71-0, C2H6O2S, MW 94.14; the USP monograph sets assay 98.0–102.0% on the anhydrous basis, melting range 108.5–110.5 °C, chromatographic purity NLT 99.8%, dimethyl sulfoxide NMT 0.1% and total impurities NMT 0.2%. Insist on the distilled rather than crystallised grade if the DMSO limit matters to you. The origin questions are the ones that create recalls, so they are settled before the blend is made. Glucosamine from crustacean shell chitin is a declarable crustacean allergen under EU Regulation 1169/2011 Annex II and US FALCPA and must be labelled as such, even though the extracted molecule carries little shellfish protein. Glucosamine made by fermentation of Aspergillus niger, or from non-GMO corn glucose, is crustacean-free and vegetarian, and it is an authorised novel food in Great Britain for use in food supplements, gluten-free and sports nutrition products — both the hydrochloride and the sulphate potassium chloride are on the register. Chondroitin has no vegan equivalent: it is animal cartilage, so the finished blend is not vegan and cannot be sold as such, the porcine grade is closed out of halal and kosher, the shark grade is a fish allergen, and bovine material needs BSE/TSE country-of-origin documentation. MSM is synthetic and vegan. The honest summary for a label is that a fermentation-glucosamine plus bovine-chondroitin plus MSM blend is crustacean-free and shellfish-free but still animal-derived. Blending and dosage form are where the technical work sits. The market's usual daily-dose architecture is glucosamine 1500 mg, chondroitin sulphate 1200 mg and MSM 1000–1500 mg, and Thovek blends to the customer's ratio rather than a house one. Chondroitin sulphate is markedly hygroscopic and MSM is a soluble crystalline solid, so blends are made under controlled humidity, matched for particle size to stop segregation on the tablet press, and packed with the moisture barrier the format needs. Because the actives are bulky, tablets in this class are large: expect a two- or three-tablet daily dose, or a granulated direct-compression grade if compaction and tablet weight are the constraint. Powder blends, granulates, stick packs, capsule fills and film-coated tablets are all made to specification. Thovek describes composition and food-technology function only, and makes no therapeutic or disease claim for this blend or any component.
