Flaxseed Powder

Flaxseed Powder

Linum usitatissimum L. · cold-milled whole seed, ALA and dietary fibre

Cold-milled powder of whole flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum), full-fat, supplying alpha-linolenic acid, soluble mucilage and insoluble hull fibre. Vegan, naturally gluten free, brown and golden types.

Specifications

Botanical identityLinum usitatissimum L. (Linaceae), mature whole seed; brown and golden (yellow) seed types, food grade
ProcessCleaned whole seed cold-milled at controlled temperature; no solvent, no carrier and no de-oiling in the standard full-fat grade
Appearance and odourFree-flowing powder, mid-brown from brown seed or beige from golden seed, with a characteristic nutty odour and taste
Fat and fatty acid profileTotal fat typically 38-42% (whole seed reported near 41 g/100 g); ALA (C18:3 n-3) 40-60% of total fatty acids, linoleic 12-17%, oleic 13-19%
ProteinTypically 18-22%; whole flaxseed is reported at about 20 g per 100 g. Kjeldahl nitrogen x 6.25
Total dietary fibreTypically 25-30%; whole flaxseed reported at about 28 g per 100 g, soluble to insoluble ratio between roughly 20:80 and 40:60
LignansSecoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG) occurs naturally, but published seed values span a very wide range, so SDG is not guaranteed unless a standardised grade is ordered
Particle sizeStandard 40 mesh; 60 and 80 mesh available. Finer meshes increase surface area and shorten oxidative shelf life
MoistureNot more than 8.0%
Native constituents to noteFlaxseed naturally contains cyanogenic glycosides (linustatin, neolinustatin, linamarin). Residual HCN is tested per lot and reported on the CoA
Heavy metals and microbiologyTested every lot against buyer or EU/Codex limits. Cadmium is monitored specifically because flax is a recognised cadmium-accumulating crop
Allergens, origin and dietVegan, plant origin; not bovine, porcine or marine. No milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean or nut. Naturally gluten free; cereal and sesame cross-contact controlled and tested
Shelf life and storage12 months for full-fat cold-milled powder and 18 months for stabilised grades, in sealed original packs below 25 C, away from light and air

Thovek supplies flaxseed powder milled from cleaned whole Linum usitatissimum seed, in both brown and golden seed types. Milling is done at controlled temperature so the seed's own oil stays inside the matrix: the standard grade is full-fat, with total fat typically 38-42% and alpha-linolenic acid, the plant omega-3, accounting for 40-60% of total fatty acids alongside linoleic acid at 12-17% and oleic at 13-19%. Whole flaxseed is reported at roughly 20 g protein and 28 g total dietary fibre per 100 g, the fibre split between soluble mucilage and insoluble hull material in a ratio between about 20:80 and 40:60. Flax lignans, principally secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), are naturally present but published seed values span an extremely wide range, so no SDG figure is guaranteed on a plain milled powder unless a standardised grade is ordered. Two properties drive formulation work with this ingredient. The first is water binding: the soluble mucilage hydrates fast and thickens, which is why milled flax is used as an egg-replacer system in vegan bakery, as a texture and moisture aid in bars and doughs, and as a fibre carrier in shakes and meal replacements. The second is oxidative sensitivity. Grinding exposes a highly unsaturated oil, so mesh selection is a shelf-life decision as much as a mouthfeel one: 40 mesh is the standard, finer meshes give a smoother texture but a shorter life. Where the finished product needs a long ambient shelf life, specify the stabilised grade or the partially defatted high-fibre flax meal, which carries far less oil to protect and concentrates fibre and protein instead. Material is sourced from Indian flax-growing belts, cleaned, milled and packed at food-grade facilities, and released against a lot certificate of analysis covering moisture, fat, protein, fibre, particle size, microbiology, pesticide residues and heavy metals. Cadmium is monitored specifically, since flax is a recognised cadmium-accumulating crop, and residual hydrocyanic acid is tested because the seed naturally carries cyanogenic glycosides. The powder is vegan and plant-origin, not bovine, porcine or marine, contains no milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean or nut material, and is naturally gluten free with cereal and sesame cross-contact controlled and verified by test. Conventional and certified organic (NPOP, NOP, EU) material is available, with documentation, samples and stability data on request.
