Lutein (CAS 127-40-2, C40H56O2, molecular weight 568.87, beta,epsilon-carotene-3,3'-diol) and zeaxanthin (CAS 144-68-3, the same formula and the same mass, beta,beta-carotene-3,3'-diol) are structural isomers that differ only in the position of one double bond in a terminal ring. Together with meso-zeaxanthin (CAS 31272-50-1, the 3R,3'S stereoisomer) they are the three carotenoids that make up the macular pigment of the human retina, and that is the whole commercial logic of this category. Both come here from one raw material: marigold flower, Tagetes erecta L., solvent-extracted to an oleoresin of lutein esters and then saponified with potassium hydroxide to free the diols. The JECFA specification for the saponified material calls for not less than 80% total carotenoids and not less than 70% lutein, with zeaxanthin typically running at 2 to 9% of the carotenoid fraction - so marigold feedstock on its own gives an unbalanced ratio and the zeaxanthin is topped up separately to hit the declared figure. The softgel is the right dosage form because these are fat-soluble pigments that are also badly behaved: sensitive to oxygen, light, heat and acid, and practically insoluble in water. The fill is a suspension - typically lutein at 20% in safflower, sunflower or MCT oil, held with beeswax and lecithin and protected with mixed tocopherols or ascorbyl palmitate - encapsulated under nitrogen into a shell that keeps light out. The 10 mg lutein with 2 mg zeaxanthin build is the ratio most of the market asks for; 20/4 and 40/8 builds and custom ratios run on the same line. Overage is set from stability data on the specific fill and shell combination rather than assumed from a rule of thumb. Shell choice is where allergen and dietary status is decided, and it is the buyer's decision to make in full knowledge. Bovine gelatin shells are bovine material, ship with a TSE/BSE statement and can be halal or kosher certified; fish gelatin shells are marine and carry a declarable fish allergen; HPMC or modified-starch shells are vegan and keep the whole unit plant-based, which matters because the carotenoids themselves are vegan. India and China are the two dominant sources of marigold for carotenoid extraction, with Indian processing concentrated in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, so the feedstock is on the doorstep. On the regulatory side, EFSA set an ADI of 1 mg per kg body weight per day for lutein (E 161b) in 2010 on material of at least 80% total carotenoids, and JECFA at its 86th meeting in 2018 gave a group ADI 'not specified' to lutein and lutein esters from Tagetes erecta and to synthetic zeaxanthin. Neither lutein nor zeaxanthin holds an authorised EU health claim, so European labels that need one are normally built on the vitamin A, riboflavin or zinc vision claims instead.

Packaging: Alu-alu or alu-PVDC blisters of 10, 15 or 30 softgels in printed mono-cartons with leaflet, or 30/60/90/120-count HDPE bottles with induction seal, desiccant canister, cotton or polyester filler and optional child-resistant cap. Opaque bottles and foil-backed blisters are strongly preferred over clear PET, because carotenoids bleach on light exposure and a clear pack costs you assay across shelf life. Unpacked bulk softgels ship in double food-grade LDPE liners inside 20-25 kg fibre drums under a nitrogen headspace. Cartons and bottles are shrink-wrapped into 5-ply export corrugated shippers, strapped and palletised on ISPM-15 heat-treated pallets, with batch code, manufacture and expiry printed at every packaging level.
