Specifications
| Format | Finished two-piece hard capsule, size 0 or 00, 400-600 mg fill of dry-blended standardised extracts and excipients. Per-capsule loading set to the buyer's label claim. |
| Capsule shell | HPMC (hypromellose) as standard: vegan, no bovine or porcine input, halal and kosher compatible. Bovine gelatin on request - specify at order, it ends the vegan claim. |
| Black cohosh component | Actaea racemosa L. (Ranunculaceae), accepted name for Cimicifuga racemosa (L.) Nutt.; dried rhizome and root. Triterpene glycosides 2.5% or 5%; native 4:1 and 10:1 grades. |
| Black cohosh marker chemistry | Actein, 23-epi-26-deoxyactein, cimicifugoside and cimigenol, with cimicifugic acids and fukinolic acid. Formononetin is absent from ethanolic and isopropanolic extracts. |
| Identity and substitution control | Asian Actaea and Cimicifuga species are the recurring substitution route. Each intake lot authenticated by HPTLC against retained reference; DNA barcoding on request. |
| Red clover component | Trifolium pratense L. (Fabaceae), flowering tops. Total isoflavones 8%, 20% or 40% by HPLC on the aglycone basis: biochanin A, formononetin, genistein and daidzein. |
| Soy isoflavone module | Glycine max isoflavones offered as an alternative leg. Soy is declarable under EU Annex II and US FALCPA; red clover is not. The default Thovek build is soy-free. |
| Shatavari and chasteberry modules | Asparagus racemosus Willd. root, 5-50% total saponins, shatavarin IV marker. Vitex agnus-castus L. (Lamiaceae) ripe fruit standardised on agnuside, with aucubin and casticin. |
| Dong quai module | Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels root, Chinese origin; ligustilide and ferulic acid. Carries coumarins and furanocoumarins - weigh against anticoagulant co-use. |
| Optional nutrients and authorised claim | Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine HCl), calcium, magnesium, vitamin D3 and vitamin E. EU Reg. 432/2012 gives B6 the hormonal-activity function claim on significant-source terms. |
| Hepatic caution on black cohosh | EMA position: users stop and consult a doctor on signs of liver problems - tiredness, appetite loss, yellowing of skin and eyes, upper abdominal pain, dark urine. |
| Botanical claim status | No EU health claim is authorised for Actaea racemosa, Trifolium pratense, Asparagus racemosus or Vitex agnus-castus; botanical claims stay on hold. Claims are the brand's job. |
| Allergen, diet and origin status | Standard build free from milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, mollusc, gluten, peanut, tree nut and sesame. Red clover is a legume. Vegan with the HPMC shell. |
| Excipients, testing and shelf life | MCC, colloidal silica, vegetable magnesium stearate. Weight variation, disintegration and content uniformity to IP/USP. 24 months below 25 C at under 60% RH. |
| HS code | 2106.90 (21069099) |
This is a finished dosage form, not a raw material: a hard capsule carrying a dry-blended matrix of standardised botanical extracts built for the women's midlife category. The anchor is black cohosh, Actaea racemosa L. (Ranunculaceae), which is the accepted name for what most of the trade still calls Cimicifuga racemosa (L.) Nutt. The part used is the dried rhizome and root, standardised on total triterpene glycosides at 2.5% or 5%, with native 4:1 and 10:1 ratio grades available for formulators who prefer a whole-extract profile. The marker chemistry is the triterpene series - actein, 23-epi-26-deoxyactein, cimicifugoside and cimigenol - sitting alongside cimicifugic acids and fukinolic acid. One point buyers raise repeatedly is worth settling in the specification: formononetin has been reported in methanolic extracts but is not a constituent of the commercially available ethanolic and isopropanolic extracts, so an isoflavone-free black cohosh position is defensible provided the extract type is written into the contract. Identity is the other live risk in this material, because Asian Actaea and Cimicifuga species are the recurring substitution route, so every intake lot is authenticated by HPTLC fingerprint against retained A. racemosa reference material, with DNA barcoding available on request.
The isoflavone leg is red clover, Trifolium pratense L. (Fabaceae), flowering tops, standardised by HPLC at 8%, 20% or 40% total isoflavones on the aglycone basis and profiled across biochanin A, formononetin, genistein and daidzein. Red clover also carries coumarin and flavonoid derivatives, which formulators need to weigh where the finished pack may be taken alongside anticoagulant regimes; the same consideration attaches to the optional dong quai module, Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels root of Chinese origin, whose ligustilide and ferulic acid profile sits next to a coumarin and furanocoumarin fraction. Soy isoflavones from Glycine max are offered as an alternative or additional leg, and that choice is not neutral - soy is a declarable allergen under EU Annex II and US FALCPA, while red clover is not, so the default Thovek build is deliberately soy-free. The Ayurvedic and Western modules are shatavari, Asparagus racemosus Willd. root at 5-50% total saponins with shatavarin IV as the named HPLC marker, and chasteberry, Vitex agnus-castus L. (Lamiaceae) dried ripe fruit standardised on the iridoid glycoside agnuside, with aucubin and casticin in the accompanying profile. Defensible label copy comes from the nutrient side rather than the botanical side: vitamin B6 as pyridoxine hydrochloride carries the authorised EU function claim on the regulation of hormonal activity under Commission Regulation (EU) No 432/2012, subject to the significant-source condition, and calcium, magnesium, vitamin D3 and vitamin E can be built in against their own authorised claims. No EU health claim is authorised for Actaea racemosa, Trifolium pratense, Asparagus racemosus or Vitex agnus-castus - botanical claims remain on hold - and India, the US and the Gulf states each handle this differently, so claim strategy is the brand owner's responsibility, market by market.
One labelling obligation is not optional. The European Medicines Agency's position on black cohosh preparations is that users should stop taking the product and consult a doctor immediately on symptoms suggestive of liver problems - tiredness, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin and eyes, severe upper abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting, or dark urine - and pack copy is expected to carry a caution to that effect. Confirm the exact required wording for the destination market before artwork is signed off, because it varies. Supply is a two-piece hard capsule in size 0 or 00 with a 400-600 mg fill, HPMC shell as standard so the article is vegan end to end, or bovine gelatin where the destination market prefers it - a gelatin shell ends the vegan claim and brings a bovine origin declaration with it. Lanolin-derived vitamin D3 is from sheep wool and is vegetarian but not vegan, while lichen-derived D3 is vegan and costs more. Excipients are microcrystalline cellulose, colloidal silicon dioxide and vegetable-source magnesium stearate, with stearate-free builds available. Every batch ships with assay, heavy metal, pesticide, mycotoxin and microbiological data alongside allergen, GMO and vegan declarations, plus weight variation, disintegration and content uniformity to IP or USP method.
