Amla & Giloy Juice Blend

This is a two-part liquid and the two parts are not the same kind of material, which is the first thing to get straight on the specification. The amla fraction is expressed juice of the ripe fruit of Phyllanthus emblica L. (syn. Emblica officinalis Gaertn.), family Phyllanthaceae — pressed, screened and shipped either single-strength or as a concentrate. The giloy fraction is an aqueous extract of the mature stem of Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook.f. & Thomson, family Menispermaceae. It is a stem extract, not a juice, because giloy is a woody climber whose bitter clerodane diterpenoid fraction sits in the stem; leaf and root are not equivalent material and we do not use them here. The house reference build is 90 parts amla juice to 10 parts giloy stem extract solution, the giloy extract itself standardised to 2.5–5% bitters by gravimetry before it is diluted in, with 95:5 and 80:20 builds made to order and stated on the label. Both botanicals are Indian-grown; pressing, blending, filling and release testing are done in India. Amla is bought for its vitamin C, and vitamin C is exactly where amla juice specifications go wrong. Published ascorbic acid figures for the fresh fruit run from roughly 190 to over 700 mg per 100 g, and a great deal of that spread is method rather than cultivar. The classic DCPIP and iodometric titrations measure reducing capacity, and amla is loaded with tannins and other polyphenols that reduce the dye independently of ascorbic acid and mask the endpoint in a dark, acidic matrix, so a titration reads high. We report ascorbic acid by HPLC and we recommend you write HPLC into the purchase order as the release method. The second half of the problem is that native ascorbic acid degrades through thermal processing and across shelf life, so a figure that is true at filling need not be true at month eighteen. If your label has to carry a vitamin C number that holds to the end of the stated shelf life — and in the EU a vitamin C function claim is lawful only where the product delivers a significant amount as defined in Annex XIII of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, which for a beverage is 7.5% of the 80 mg nutrient reference value per 100 mL — specify an end-of-life minimum and take a fortified grade, with the added ascorbic acid declared in the ingredient list rather than passed off as native. The giloy side carries a different exposure, and it is identity. Tinospora cordifolia is routinely confused in the Indian raw-drug trade with Tinospora crispa and Tinospora sinensis; market samples have repeatedly been reported as mixed or misidentified, and the distinction is not cosmetic, since T. crispa is the species most often implicated in the published reports of Tinospora-associated liver injury. Every giloy lot we take is screened by macroscopy and HPTLC against those two species, mature stem only, and the authentication report travels on the certificate of analysis. The rest of the file is ordinary low-pH beverage discipline: hot-fill or aseptic processing, a fully declared preservative system inside FSSAI Class II limits or a genuinely preservative-free build, microbiology to beverage limits, and heavy metals and pesticide residues to the AYUSH export limits. The juice is vegan, allergen-free and non-GMO, with no bovine, porcine, marine or dairy input anywhere in it.
