Tulsi, or holy basil, is Ocimum tenuiflorum L. (synonym Ocimum sanctum L.), a member of the Lamiaceae grown across India and revered in Ayurveda as Tulasi. Thovek supplies leaf extract produced from shade-dried leaf by aqueous or hydroalcoholic extraction, concentration and spray drying. The leaf carries two distinct chemistries that matter to a formulator. The first is the triterpene acid fraction, principally ursolic acid (C30H48O3, MW 456.7) and its isomer oleanolic acid. The second is the water-soluble phenolic fraction, chiefly rosmarinic acid (C18H16O8, MW 360.3). A volatile fraction is also present, dominated in most Indian material by eugenol, though published essential oil profiles vary sharply with genotype, with reported eugenol levels ranging from roughly 14% to 70% of the oil. Standard commercial grades are 1%, 2% and 2.5% ursolic acid by HPLC. Total triterpene acid grades combining ursolic and oleanolic acid, rosmarinic acid grades and native ratio extracts at 4:1 and 10:1 with no marker claim are produced to order. Two sourcing risks are worth stating plainly. The first is species substitution: Ocimum basilicum (sweet basil) and Ocimum gratissimum (often sold as vana tulsi) are cheaper and botanically distinct, so identity is confirmed on the incoming leaf by macroscopic and microscopic examination and by chromatographic fingerprint, not on the finished powder alone. The second is marker spiking, because isolated ursolic acid is inexpensive relative to a genuine extract; we release against a full HPLC fingerprint rather than a single peak and will supply the chromatogram with the COA. Rama, Krishna and Vana type material can be segregated by lot where a buyer's own monograph calls for it. Tulsi extract is vegan and vegetarian, non-GMO, and free from milk, egg, fish, crustacean, soy, peanut, tree nut and sesame. Carried grades use maize-derived maltodextrin or gum acacia and are declared gluten-free on that basis; carrier-free grades are inherently gluten-free. The powder is hygroscopic and should be held sealed below 25 degrees C at low relative humidity, with drums resealed immediately after sampling.
