Terminalia bellerica extract (Bibhitaki)

Bibhitaki is the dried ripe fruit of Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., a large Combretaceae tree of the South Asian plains, and one of the three fruits of the classical Triphala combination alongside Terminalia chebula and Emblica officinalis. Thovek supplies the de-stoned pericarp extracted with water or aqueous ethanol and standardised on tannin content, most commonly at 20%, 40% or 45% by UV spectrophotometry, with native ratio grades at 4:1 and 10:1 for formulators who prefer a whole-fruit profile over a single marker figure. The tannin fraction here is hydrolysable rather than condensed, and the constituents that carry the assay are gallic acid, ellagic acid, corilagin and chebulagic acid. Because tannin numbers move with the method used, every Thovek lot names the assay technique on the certificate of analysis: a UV result and a titrimetric result on the same powder are not interchangeable, and a purchase specification that states only a percentage invites a dispute at goods-in. Material is available conventional or certified organic to NPOP, NOP and EU standards, and as low-microbial or steam-treated grades for direct-compression and capsule lines. The extract is wholly plant-derived and carries no milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, cereal gluten, peanut or tree-nut source material, so it supports vegan and vegetarian labelling.
