Shankhpushpi is one of the few Ayurvedic trade names where the botany itself is the commercial risk. The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India recognises the whole plant of Convolvulus prostratus Forssk. (Convolvulaceae) as the genuine source, but at least three other species move through the Indian market under the same name — Evolvulus alsinoides (L.) L., Clitoria ternatea L. and Canscora decussata — because all four fit morphological descriptions in the classical texts. They are chemically different plants. The standard commercial article is a whole-plant (panchang) extract of C. prostratus, offered as a native ratio powder at 4:1, 5:1, 10:1 or 20:1, or against the long-established trade specification of bitters not less than 5% with total alkaloids not less than 1%. The plant's reported constituents include the alkaloids convolvine, convolamine and shankhapushpine, the flavonoids kaempferol, quercetin and myricetin, sterols including beta-sitosterol, and the coumarin scopoletin (CAS 92-61-5, C10H8O4). Scopoletin is best used as an identity marker rather than a potency assay: published method work on Convolvulus found a maximum of about 0.17% scopoletin in a 50% ethanolic extract, against 0.09% in methanol and 0.04% in water, so a specification demanding several percent scopoletin is not achievable from this raw material and should be treated as a red flag when comparing offers. The extract is a light brown to greenish-brown free-flowing powder with a mild herbaceous odour, and it blends cleanly into capsule, tablet, churna, syrup and instant-premix bases. It is plant-derived throughout: vegan and vegetarian, with no milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, gluten, sesame, peanut or tree-nut input in the material or the process, and no bovine, porcine or marine content.
