Safed Musli Extract (Chlorophytum borivilianum)

Safed musli extract is produced from the dried fasciculated root tubers of Chlorophytum borivilianum Santapau & R.R.Fern. (Asparagaceae), the species accepted under that name in Plants of the World Online and the one that carries the highest tuber yield and saponin content of the thirteen Chlorophytum species traded in India. The tuber is dominated by two fractions: spirostane- and furostane-type steroidal saponins, including the borivilianosides and chlorophytosides, and a large carbohydrate fraction of root fructans and free sugars (sucrose, glucose, fructose, galactose, mannose, xylose) that gives the finished powder its bland taste and good water dispersibility. Thovek standardises on total saponins by gravimetry at 10%, 20% and 40% w/w, and also supplies native ratio extracts at 4:1 and 10:1 and plain milled tuber powder. Gravimetry rather than HPLC is the working assay here because the individual C. borivilianum saponins lack a useful chromophore and certified reference standards are not commercially routine; buyers who need a chromatographic fingerprint receive an HPTLC profile alongside the gravimetric figure. Identity control matters more than usual on this material: C. arundinaceum, C. tuberosum and C. laxum are cheaper look-alikes sold into the same market, and Curculigo orchioides (kali musli) is a wholly different genus traded under the same common name. Every lot is authenticated against a retained botanical reference before extraction and each batch ships with a full CoA covering assay, loss on drying, ash, heavy metals, microbiology and residual solvents. Material is contracted from cultivated tuber growers in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, dried and graded at intake, then extracted with water or ethanol–water; no chlorinated solvents are used at any stage.
