Rhodiola rosea L. (Crassulaceae), roseroot or golden root, is a cold-climate succulent whose dried root and rhizome supply this extract. Two marker families define it. The first is the cinnamyl alcohol glycoside group reported collectively as rosavins, comprising rosavin (CAS 84954-92-7, C20H28O10), rosin and rosarin. The second is salidroside, the tyrosol glucoside also called rhodioloside (CAS 10338-51-9). The USP Herbal Medicines Compendium sets the crude drug at not less than 0.3% phenylpropenoid glycosides calculated as rosavin and not less than 0.08% salidroside on the dried basis, and the European Pharmacopoeia added monograph 2893, Rhodiola root and rhizome, in Supplement 11.5 with effect from 1 July 2024. The 3% rosavins to 1% salidroside grade is the long-standing trade specification because that roughly 3:1 ratio is the proportion found in intact Rhodiola rosea root. That ratio is also the authenticity test, and it matters more here than for most botanicals. Rhodiola crenulata and Rhodiola kirilowii are cheaper, widely traded and contain salidroside, but they carry essentially no rosavins. A certificate reporting only salidroside therefore proves nothing about species, and a lot sold as rosavin-standardised can be reconstructed by spiking a crenulata base. Thovek releases against a full HPLC chromatogram in which rosavin, rosin and rosarin are individually resolved alongside salidroside, supported by HPTLC or DNA-based identity on the incoming root, and we will share the raw chromatogram rather than a summary table on request. The compliance point that governs any bulk Rhodiola contract is CITES. All Rhodiola species were listed in CITES Appendix II at CoP19 and the listing took effect on 23 February 2023 under annotation #2, which covers all parts and derivatives except seeds, pollen, and finished products packaged and ready for retail trade. A drum of extract powder is a derivative and is not a retail-ready finished product, so it moves only with a CITES export permit from the exporting country and the matching documentation on the import side; India's foreign trade policy likewise requires a CITES permit for listed species including cultivated material. Buyers should build permit lead time into their planning and confirm their own national CITES import requirements before placing an order. The powder itself is a light brown, faintly rose-scented, free-flowing material, vegan and vegetarian, non-GMO, and produced with no milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, gluten, sesame or tree-nut inputs.
