Neem extract (Azadirachta indica)

Azadirachta indica A. Juss. · 5–10% bitters, leaf

Specifications

Botanical sourceAzadirachta indica A. Juss., family Meliaceae. Synonym Melia azadirachta L.; INCI name Melia azadirachta leaf extract. Hindi nim, Sanskrit nimba.
Plant partDried mature leaf. Seed, kernel and bark are separate articles of commerce and are not blended into this grade.
StandardisationBitters 5% or 10% by gravimetry. Native ratio grades 4:1, 5:1 and 10:1 to order; nimbin-referenced material on written specification.
Marker profileLimonoid bitter principles including nimbin, salannin and nimbolide, with flavonoids and phenolics; profile fixed by HPTLC fingerprint.
Azadirachtin positionLeaf carries roughly 10-100 ppm azadirachtin against 200-900 ppm in kernel extracts. Azadirachtin-standardised material is a seed product, not this one.
ExtractionWater or aqueous ethanol; no chlorinated solvents. Residual solvents held to ICH Q3C Class 3 limits.
Appearance and odourGreen-brown to dark brown fine powder; markedly bitter taste and characteristic pungent green odour.
Solubility and particle sizeWater dispersible, fully soluble in aqueous ethanol. NLT 95% passes 80 mesh; typical bulk density 0.35-0.55 g/mL.
Loss on drying and ashLOD NMT 5.0% at 105 °C. Total ash NMT 6.0%; acid-insoluble ash NMT 2.0%.
Heavy metals and microbiologyPb, As, Cd, Hg per USP <232> and AYUSH limits. TPC NMT 10,000 cfu/g; yeast and mould NMT 500 cfu/g; E. coli, Salmonella, S. aureus absent.
Pesticides and aflatoxinEU MRL screen each lot. Total aflatoxin NMT 4 ppb, B1 NMT 2 ppb. Organic lots are wild-collected or grown without synthetic inputs.
Allergen statusNo milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, cereal gluten, peanut or tree-nut source material. The neem fruit is a drupe, not a tree nut for labelling.
Origin and diet statusIndian origin, wholly plant-derived; vegan and vegetarian suitable. Non-GMO. EU novel-food status should be confirmed before placing on that market.
Shelf life24 months in sealed original packing below 25 °C, RH under 60%, protected from light.
HS code1302.19.16, extracts of neem
Neem here is the leaf of Azadirachta indica A. Juss., a Meliaceae tree grown across the Indian plains and carried in older literature under the synonym Melia azadirachta L. Thovek supplies a leaf extract standardised on total bitters, typically at 5% or 10% by gravimetry, with native ratio grades from 4:1 to 10:1 where the buyer wants an unadjusted profile. The bitter fraction is a limonoid mixture led by nimbin, salannin and nimbolide, supported by flavonoids and phenolics, and the whole profile is fixed by HPTLC fingerprint rather than by a single marker compound. The commercially decisive question on neem is which part of the tree the material came from. Azadirachtin, the compound most buyers associate with the name, sits almost entirely in the seed kernel — reported at roughly 200 to 900 ppm in kernel extracts against only about 10 to 100 ppm in leaf — so any specification calling for azadirachtin at percentage level describes a seed product and not this one. Seed-derived azadirachtin concentrates are, in most jurisdictions, regulated as plant-protection actives rather than food ingredients and classify in heading 3808 rather than chapter 13, which changes both the registration burden and the duty position. Thovek keeps the leaf and seed supply chains separate and states the plant part on the certificate of analysis for every lot. The extract is Indian origin and wholly plant-derived, vegan and vegetarian suitable, non-GMO, and free of milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, cereal gluten, peanut and tree-nut source material — the neem fruit is a drupe and is not a tree nut for allergen-labelling purposes. Market access varies more for neem than for most Ayurvedic botanicals: it is not a self-evident pre-1997 European food, and buyers placing neem food supplements on the EU market should confirm novel-food status with their competent authority before shipment. Thovek describes composition and botanical identity only and makes no health, nutrition or disease claim; setting label warnings, including any restriction on use during pregnancy, is the buyer's responsibility in their own market.

Available grades

Bitters 5% and 10% by gravimetry; native ratio 4:1, 5:1 and 10:1. Conventional and certified organic (NPOP, NOP, EU). Kosher and halal on request. Cosmetic grade supplied against INCI Melia azadirachta leaf extract. Seed-derived azadirachtin concentrate is not offered under this product code.

Packaging: 25 kg fibre or HDPE drum with double food-grade LDPE liner. 1 kg and 5 kg aluminium foil-laminate pouches for trial quantities. Neem is strongly odour-active, so drums are heat-sealed and stowed away from neutral-odour cargo in shared containers.
