Mucuna pruriens Extract (L-DOPA)

Mucuna pruriens (L.) DC. seed · 10-20% L-DOPA by HPLC

Velvet bean seed extract standardised on L-DOPA by HPLC at 10%, 15% or 20%. A vegan, gluten-free, non-GMO botanical concentrate supplied in 25 kg bulk with per-batch assay and purity data.

Specifications

Botanical identityMucuna pruriens (L.) DC., family Fabaceae. Velvet bean, cowhage; Sanskrit Kapikachhu or Atmagupta. Dehulled seed only, irritant pod trichomes excluded.
StandardisationL-DOPA not less than 10.0%, 15.0% or 20.0% by HPLC according to the grade ordered; the assayed figure is stated on each batch certificate of analysis.
Marker compoundL-DOPA (levodopa), 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-L-alanine. CAS 59-92-7; C9H11NO4; MW 197.19; melting point 276-278 C with decomposition.
Native seed contentUntreated seed carries about 3-6% L-DOPA, with a reported literature range of under 1% to 7%, so every standardised grade is a concentrated extract.
ExtractionWater or hydro-alcoholic (ethanol/water) extraction of milled seed, concentrated and dried. No excipient carrier unless a diluted grade is specified.
Appearance and odourFree-flowing fine powder, light to dark brown, with a characteristic mild legume odour. Colour deepens at higher assay and on oxidative exposure.
Particle sizeNot less than 95% passing 80 mesh (approximately 180 micron). Alternative mesh cuts and granulated grades available to order.
SolubilityPartly dispersible in water, leaving plant-matrix insolubles. Isolated L-DOPA is only slightly soluble in water and freely soluble in 1 M hydrochloric acid.
Loss on drying and ashLoss on drying not more than 5.0% at 105 C; total ash not more than 5.0%; acid-insoluble ash not more than 1.0%.
Heavy metals and pesticidesLead NMT 3 ppm, arsenic NMT 1 ppm, cadmium NMT 1 ppm, mercury NMT 0.1 ppm by ICP-MS each batch. Pesticide residues to USP and EU botanical limits.
MicrobiologyTotal plate count NMT 10,000 cfu/g; yeast and mould NMT 500 cfu/g; E. coli and S. aureus absent in 10 g; Salmonella absent in 25 g.
Allergen, dietary and origin statusA legume seed but not a declarable allergen under EU or US rules. Free from milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, gluten and tree nut. Vegan, non-GMO, BSE/TSE-free, Indian origin.
Shelf life and storage24 months from manufacture in unopened packs. Store below 25 C and under 60% RH, sealed and away from light; L-DOPA is light and air sensitive and darkens when moist.
HS codeIndia ITC-HS 13021919, vegetable saps and extracts, extracts, other. GST 18%. Final classification rests with the importing customs authority.
Mucuna pruriens extract is a seed extract of the tropical legume Mucuna pruriens (L.) DC., the velvet bean, known in Ayurveda as Kapikachhu or Atmagupta. Thovek supplies it as a free-flowing brown powder standardised on L-DOPA by HPLC, most commonly at 10%, 15% and 20%, produced by water or hydro-alcoholic extraction of dehulled, milled seed. Only the seed is used. The pods are discarded, since their trichomes carry mucunain and are a contact irritant that has no place in a food-grade supply chain. L-DOPA, or levodopa, is the naturally occurring amino acid 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-L-alanine (CAS 59-92-7, C9H11NO4, molecular weight 197.19) and the biosynthetic precursor of dopamine in plants and animals. Untreated Mucuna seed carries roughly 3-6% L-DOPA, with published values spanning under 1% to 7%, so any standardised grade is a genuine concentrate rather than milled seed. Independent surveys of retail products claiming 15% to 98% L-DOPA have repeatedly found declared figures that do not match assay, and grades far above the botanical ceiling can only be reached by intensive concentration or by adding synthesised material. Thovek states the extraction route and the assayed value for every lot, and material sold as botanical extract is not spiked. Because L-DOPA is light and air sensitive and oxidises to coloured quinones when moist, lots ship in sealed opaque liners, with nitrogen flushing standard on higher-assay grades. The material is a vegan, non-GMO, gluten-free legume extract with no milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean or tree-nut content and no animal-derived processing aids. Regulatory status differs sharply by market: Mucuna is a long-established Ayurvedic seed in India, whereas in the EU preparations without a significant history of consumption before 15 May 1997 fall under the novel food Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, and Italy does not permit Mucuna in food supplements at all. Buyers should confirm permitted-botanical status, dosage and labelling constraints for each destination before formulating. Thovek makes no therapeutic or disease claim for this ingredient. Every shipment travels with a batch certificate of analysis covering HPLC assay, heavy metals, pesticides, residual solvents and microbiology, together with allergen, non-GMO and BSE/TSE statements.

Available grades

Standardised seed extract at 10%, 15% and 20% L-DOPA by HPLC. Non-standardised full-spectrum seed powder and higher-concentration grades are quoted on request, with the concentration route disclosed in writing. Organic certification (NPOP, NOP, EU) and kosher or halal documentation available by prior agreement.

Packaging: 25 kg net in double food-grade LDPE liners inside fibre or HDPE drums; 1 kg and 5 kg aluminium foil laminate pouches for trial and pilot lots. Opaque liners and nitrogen flushing are standard on higher-assay grades to limit oxidative darkening. Palletised and shrink-wrapped for FCL or LCL export from Indian ports.
