Moringa Leaf Extract (Moringa oleifera)

Moringa oleifera Lam. (Moringaceae), the drumstick or horseradish tree, is grown across southern India, with Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka carrying most of the acreage. The leaf is the part used here, and the single most common misunderstanding in this line is the gap between leaf powder and leaf extract. Leaf powder is dried, milled leaf: the whole matrix, fibre included, at whatever marker level the crop happened to deliver. This product is an extract — leaf extracted with water or aqueous ethanol, concentrated and spray-dried — which raises selected constituents several-fold and lets a marker be held to a written figure. They are different goods commercially, compositionally and, as it turns out, for customs. Standardisation runs along two tracks. The saponin track quotes total saponins by gravimetry at 5, 10, 20, 25 or 40 per cent and carries most of the volume. The phenolic track quotes flavonol glycosides by HPLC — quercetin-3-O-glucoside, rutin and kaempferol glycosides are the usual named markers, alongside caffeoylquinic acids — and is what antioxidant-positioned brands generally want to see on the certificate. Native ratio extracts at 4:1, 10:1 and 20:1 are supplied where no marker is specified. A third group of buyers asks about glucosinolates: moringa leaf carries glucomoringin, 4-(alpha-L-rhamnopyranosyloxy)benzyl glucosinolate, which the enzyme myrosinase converts to the isothiocyanate moringin. That chemistry is genuine but fragile, since heat during drying and extraction inactivates myrosinase and levels shift with harvest and process, so glucosinolate-standardised material is made to order rather than held as a stock grade. The powder is deep green with a grassy, tea-like note, and both the colour and the flavour carry into pale beverages and neutral protein bases; trial at the intended inclusion rate before a formula is locked. There is no milk, egg, fish, crustacean, soy, gluten, peanut or tree-nut input and no bovine, porcine or marine material, so the extract suits vegan and vegetarian products. One regulatory point is worth raising early with EU-bound buyers: Moringa oleifera leaf is dealt with in the European Commission's Novel Food Catalogue, and which entry applies turns on the form, the preparation and the intended use, so check the current entry against your own specification rather than assume that the leaf's food history covers a concentrated extract.
