Jatamansi Extract (Nardostachys jatamansi)

Jatamansi is Nardostachys jatamansi (D.Don) DC., a high-altitude Himalayan herb of the family Caprifoliaceae - older texts place it in Valerianaceae - and long traded under the synonym Nardostachys grandiflora DC. and the English names spikenard, nard and muskroot. The extracted part is the dried rhizome with root, cleaned of soil and aerial residue before milling. Its chemistry is dominated by nardosinone-type sesquiterpenoids: nardosinone, kanshone A and kanshone C, isonardosinone and nardosinonediol, reported almost exclusively from root and rhizome tissue, alongside acaciin, ursolic and oleanolic acid, beta-sitosterol, octacosanol and aristolen-9beta-ol. There is no pharmacopoeial percentage marker in general trade use, so the material is sold on a measured drug-to-extract ratio with an HPTLC or HPLC identity fingerprint - treat any supplier's guaranteed percentage that comes without a stated method as unverified. Sourcing is the commercial heart of this product. Nardostachys jatamansi is assessed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN and is listed on CITES Appendix II, so the species cannot be bought like an ordinary botanical. We do not use wild-collected material. Supply runs from cultivated and legally procured lots with cultivation traceability, and every shipment moves against a CITES export permit issued by the Indian Management Authority; the buyer must hold the matching import permit in the destination country, or the consignment will be held at the border regardless of how the tariff line is declared. Build permit lead time into your production plan - it is longer than the manufacturing lead time, and it is not a formality that can be arranged after despatch. The powder is fine, brown to dark brown, with a strong earthy, musky odour that carries through into finished blends and usually needs masking in flavoured formats. It is vegan and vegetarian, non-GMO, and free of milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, gluten, sesame and nut inputs; kosher and halal certification is available on request.
