Jamun Seed Extract (Syzygium cumini)

Jamun seed extract is made from the dried seed, or guthli, of Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels, the Myrtaceae tree traded as jamun, jambul, Java plum or Indian blackberry and still catalogued in older pharmacopoeial and supplier literature under the synonyms Eugenia jambolana Lam., Eugenia cumini (L.) Druce and Syzygium jambolanum (Lam.) DC. Thovek supplies it as a native 4:1, 10:1 or 30:1 powder, or standardised on tannins, bitters or ellagic acid, using water or hydro-ethanol according to the buyer's declared solvent policy. The seed is chemically distinct from the fruit and the two must not be quoted interchangeably. Published analysis of jamun seed reports roughly 0.5% ellagic acid and ellagitannins and about 2.7% total polyphenolics, alongside gallic acid, the alkaloid jambosine and the glycoside jamboline (also called antimellin). The same work found no detectable anthocyanins in the seed: the delphinidin, cyanidin, petunidin, malvidin and peonidin glycosides that give jamun its colour sit in the pulp, at around 0.54%. A seed extract therefore cannot be specified, labelled or sold as an anthocyanin source. Where a formulator needs anthocyanins, the fruit or pulp extract is the correct article and should be ordered as such. Material is of Indian origin, vegan and vegetarian, and carries no milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, gluten or nut input at any stage of cultivation, drying or extraction.
