Gymnema sylvestre extract

Gymnema sylvestre extract

Gymnema sylvestre R.Br. leaf · 5-75% gymnemic acids

Leaf extract of Gymnema sylvestre, standardised 5-75% gymnemic acids by gravimetry or as gymnemagenin by HPLC. Vegan, allergen-free, spray dried in India for bulk supply.

Specifications

Botanical sourceGymnema sylvestre R.Br., family Apocynaceae; dried leaf. Ayurvedic names Madhunashini (Sanskrit) and Gurmar (Hindi); Tamil Sirukurunjan.
Product typeAqueous or hydroalcoholic leaf extract, concentrated and spray dried to a free-flowing powder. Not a milled crude herb powder.
StandardisationGymnemic acids 5%, 25%, 35%, 40% or 75% by gravimetry; gymnemagenin-assayed grades by HPLC after hydrolysis. Native ratio extracts also available.
Marker chemistryGymnemic acids are triterpenoid saponins sharing the aglycone gymnemagenin, C30H50O6, MW 506.7 (PubChem). Gurmarin and gymnemasaponins also present.
Assay method cautionGravimetric and HPLC figures are not interchangeable; gravimetry reads substantially higher. Fix the method and reference standard on the purchase order.
Appearance and odourFine light green to green-brown powder; characteristic herbal odour, distinctly bitter taste. Colour deepens with increasing assay.
SolubilityWater-soluble/water-dispersible and ethanol-soluble variants produced. High-assay saponin grades are better dispersed in warm water; specify at enquiry.
Extraction solventPotable water and/or food-grade ethanol. Residual solvents controlled to ICH/USP <467> Class 3 limits; no Class 1 or Class 2 solvents used.
Particle sizeTypically 100% through 80 mesh (approx. 180 microns). Coarser or finer cuts and low-dust granulated versions on request.
Loss on drying / bulk densityLoss on drying typically NMT 5.0% w/w. Untapped bulk density typically 0.35-0.60 g/mL, lot dependent; confirm for capsule fill sizing.
Heavy metalsLead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury controlled to USP <232> elemental impurity limits and EU Regulation 2023/915 where applicable; reported per batch.
MicrobiologyTotal plate count, yeast and mould, E. coli, Salmonella and S. aureus to USP <2021>/<2022>. Irradiation is not applied by default; status is declared.
Allergen and dietary statusVegan and vegetarian, non-GMO. Free from milk, egg, fish, crustacean, soy, peanut, tree nut, sesame, celery and mustard. Gluten-free (maize-derived carrier).
Shelf life, storage24 months from manufacture in unopened original packaging, below 25 degrees C, protected from light and moisture.

Gymnema sylvestre R.Br. is a woody climber of the Apocynaceae, native to India and long used in Ayurveda under the names Madhunashini and Gurmar, both of which translate as sugar destroyer. Thovek supplies the leaf extract: dried, milled leaf extracted with water and/or food-grade ethanol, concentrated and spray dried to a free-flowing green to green-brown powder. The characteristic constituents are the gymnemic acids, a family of triterpenoid saponins that share the aglycone gymnemagenin (C30H50O6, MW 506.7), alongside the peptide gurmarin, related gymnemasaponins and leaf flavonols. The single most important commercial point on this ingredient is the assay method. Gymnemic acids are quantified either gravimetrically or chromatographically after hydrolysis to gymnemagenin, and the two do not give comparable numbers: published method comparisons consistently show gravimetry returning markedly higher figures than HPLC. A 75% gymnemic acids extract is almost always a gravimetric result, while an HPLC gymnemagenin grade at a far lower nominal percentage can carry a similar real saponin load. We quote 5%, 25%, 35%, 40% and 75% gymnemic acids by gravimetry and gymnemagenin-assayed HPLC grades, and we ask buyers to name the method and the reference standard on the purchase order so that incoming QC and the supplier COA are measuring the same thing. Water-soluble and ethanol-soluble variants, carrier-free and maltodextrin-carried, are produced to order. The material is wholly plant-derived: vegan and vegetarian, with no milk, egg, fish, crustacean, soy, peanut, tree nut or sesame input at any stage, and non-GMO. Gluten status follows the carrier, and the maltodextrin used in our carried grades is maize-derived, so a gluten-free declaration is issued on that basis; carrier-free grades are inherently gluten-free. Every consignment ships with a batch COA covering assay, loss on drying, ash, heavy metals to USP <232>, residual solvents to Class 3 limits, pesticide screening and microbiology, together with allergen, GMO, BSE/TSE-free and country-of-origin statements. Organic (NPOP/NOP/EU), Kosher and Halal certified lots are available on advance notice.
