Guduchi Satva (Tinospora cordifolia starch)

Guduchi Satva (Tinospora cordifolia starch)

Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook.f. & Thomson · classical aqueous starch sediment

The classical Ayurvedic satva of Guduchi: the starch-rich sediment settled from macerated Tinospora cordifolia stem. A starch material, not a marker-standardised Tinospora extract.

Specifications

Botanical sourceTinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook.f. & Thomson, family Menispermaceae. Ayurvedic names Guduchi, Giloy, Amrita. Stem is the officially recognised drug in the API.
Product typeClassical satva: starch-rich sediment settled from aqueous maceration of crushed stem, then filtered and dried. Not a solvent extract and not marker-standardised.
What this is notNot a bitters-standardised Guduchi extract. If a tinosporaside, cordifolioside A or magnoflorine assay is required, order Thovek's Tinospora extract SKU instead.
Composition profileScreening of multi-season satva found alkaloids, carbohydrates and starch present; glycosides, tannins, saponins, flavonoids, phenols, proteins and steroids absent.
AppearanceCream to greenish white fine powder. Stem-derived material runs slightly greyish to greenish; root-derived satva is pure white. Microscopy shows starch grains.
Organoleptics and seasonVarsha (monsoon) lots are greenish white, slightly bitter, with the characteristic smell of Guduchi juice; other seasons give essentially tasteless, odourless material.
Yield and seasonalityYield is highest in Shishira Ritu (January to February) and lowest in Grishma (May to June). Total alkaloid content runs somewhat higher in Varsha and Vasanta.
Collection season declaredThe stem collection season is stated on the certificate of analysis so buyers can hold colour, taste and alkaloid character consistent across repeat orders.
Raw material authenticationDNA barcoding of southern Indian raw drug markets found ~20% of traded Guduchi stem non-authentic; T. sinensis is the closest adulterant. DNA identity report on request.
Solubility and particle sizePractically insoluble in cold water, forms a paste on heating in water as a starch does; insoluble in ethanol. 100% through 60 mesh as standard.
Loss on dryingThovek default offer NMT 5.0% w/w at 105 °C; final figure and pH range set in the buyer-approved specification.
Heavy metalsLead NMT 10 ppm, arsenic NMT 3 ppm, cadmium NMT 0.3 ppm, mercury NMT 1 ppm — the AYUSH / Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India limits for ASU herbal products.
MicrobiologyTotal plate count NMT 1x10^5 cfu/g; yeast and mould NMT 1x10^3 cfu/g; E. coli, Salmonella spp., S. aureus and P. aeruginosa absent, per ASU pharmacopoeial limits.
Allergen and dietary statusPlant starch. No milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, gluten or tree-nut input; not a cereal starch. Vegan and vegetarian; no bovine, porcine or marine material.

Guduchi Satva is the starchy sediment obtained when crushed stems of Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook.f. & Thomson, family Menispermaceae, are macerated in water, filtered and left to settle. It is a classical single-drug Ayurvedic preparation in its own right and it is deliberately not the same product as a Guduchi extract standardised on bitters. Published phytochemical screening of satva prepared across six seasons found alkaloids, carbohydrates and starch present, while glycosides, tannins, saponins, flavonoids, phenols, proteins and steroids were absent. Buyers who need a defined tinosporaside, cordifolioside or magnoflorine assay should order a Tinospora cordifolia extract instead; buyers who need the traditional satva should not expect one. Getting this distinction into the purchase specification prevents the most common rejection on this material. Satva is characteristically cream to greenish white, with fine starch grains and traces of crystal fibres, vessel elements, parenchyma and cork cells visible microscopically. Root-derived satva is pure white while stem-derived satva runs slightly greyish to greenish. Season drives both yield and character: yield is highest in Shishira Ritu (January to February) and lowest in Grishma (May to June), monsoon Varsha material is greenish white, slightly bitter and carries the specific smell of Guduchi juice while other seasons give essentially tasteless and odourless material, and total alkaloid content runs somewhat higher in Varsha and Vasanta. Thovek states the collection season on the certificate of analysis so that buyers can hold colour and taste consistent across repeat orders rather than discovering the variation in production. Raw material authentication is the other governing quality risk. DNA barcoding of raw drug markets in southern India has found that roughly 20% of traded Guduchi stem is not authentic T. cordifolia but a substitute or adulterant, with T. sinensis the closest and hardest to spot because its phytochemical profile is comparable. Thovek authenticates incoming stem botanically and, on request, releases a DNA-barcode identity report with the lot. The material is a plant starch with no milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, gluten or nut input, is vegan and vegetarian, and carries no bovine, porcine or marine material. Composition and food-technology function only are described; no therapeutic or disease claim is made.

Available grades

Stem-derived satva (standard, greyish to greenish white) and root-derived satva (pure white, limited availability, quoted separately). Season-declared lots for buyers holding a fixed colour and taste profile. Food grade and ASU/nutraceutical grade; kosher and halal certification available on request.

Packaging: 25 kg fibre drums with double food-grade LDPE liner and desiccant; 1 kg, 5 kg and 20 kg aluminium foil laminate pouches for trials. Palletised and shrink-wrapped. Store dry — as a starch the material picks up moisture readily and cakes if the liner seal is broken.
