Giloy extract (Tinospora cordifolia)

Giloy, or guduchi, is the dried mature stem of Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook.f. & Thomson, a Menispermaceae climber native to South and Southeast Asia; older and trade literature usually cites the name as (Willd.) Miers. The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India specifies the stem, and Thovek extracts stem only — leaf and root are excluded, and giloy satva, the settled starch preparation, is a separate article that should never be substituted for an extract on a purchase order. Standard grades are 2.5% and 5% bitters by gravimetry, with 4:1 and 10:1 native ratio material available and tinosporaside-referenced lots produced against a written specification. Species identity is the parameter that actually separates good giloy from bad.
