Daruharidra Extract (Berberis aristata)

Daruharidra, Indian barberry or tree turmeric, is the Himalayan shrub Berberis aristata DC. (Berberidaceae). Thovek supplies the standardised extract of its dried stem and root as a bright yellow powder for supplement, Ayurvedic and cosmetic manufacturers. This is a botanical extract, not an isolated alkaloid: it carries berberine as its declared marker alongside the co-occurring protoberberine and bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids palmatine, jatrorrhizine, berbamine and oxyacanthine, which is precisely why formulators who want a full-spectrum barberry profile buy it rather than the pure salt. Species identity is the single biggest quality risk in this material and deserves a straight answer. Berberis aristata is the official drug of the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India, which specifies the dried stem, but B. asiatica, B. chitria and B. lycium all trade under the Daruharidra name, and in southern India the unrelated Coscinium fenestratum is used as a substitute. A published survey of Indian herbal drug markets found most commercial samples were in fact B. asiatica rather than authentic B. aristata, with several market samples also carrying significantly elevated lead. Thovek therefore authenticates the incoming raw material by species before extraction, states the species and plant part on the certificate of analysis, and screens every lot for heavy metals rather than relying on a supplier declaration. Native berberine in authentic B. aristata runs about 3.55 percent in root and 1.02 to 2.01 percent in stem, which is the honest yield window any credible extraction ratio has to work within. Standard grades are 5, 10 and 20 percent berberine by RP-HPLC, with 60 percent enriched material available; assay runs on a C18 column with acetonitrile against phosphate buffer at pH 2.5 and detection at 346 nm, against a characterised berberine reference standard. Extraction uses food-grade ethanol and water with residual solvents held to ICH Q3C Class 3 limits. The extract is wholly plant-derived, vegan and vegetarian, with no milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, gluten or nut inputs, and it is a powerful natural yellow colourant, so dust control and dedicated scoops are worth planning for on the blending line. One regulatory point buyers must diligence themselves: EFSA's NDA Panel endorsed a draft opinion in January 2026 concluding that a safe intake level could not be established for plant preparations containing berberine, with public consultation open from 2 March to 4 May 2026; France's ANSES issued a 2019 opinion on the same subject and Belgium applies a 10 mg per day berberine ceiling in food supplements.
