Curcumin Phospholipid Complex

Curcumin Phospholipid Complex

Curcuminoid–phosphatidylcholine complex · 18–22% total curcuminoids, sunflower lecithin standard

Curcuminoid–phosphatidylcholine complex at 18–22% total curcuminoids, on sunflower lecithin as standard for a soy-free declaration. Dispersible orange-yellow powder, bulk from India.

Specifications

CompositionCurcuminoid–phospholipid complex: Curcuma longa L. rhizome extract co-processed with phosphatidylcholine-rich lecithin, dried onto microcrystalline cellulose
StandardisationTotal curcuminoids 18–22% by HPLC, typically 20% on the finished complex. Assay is on the complex, not on the turmeric extract input
Complexation ratioCurcuminoids to phospholipid nominally 1:2 by weight; phospholipid load approx. 40% of the finished powder, microcrystalline cellulose to 100%
Curcuminoid identityCurcumin CAS 458-37-7, C21H20O6, MW 368.38, with demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. Curcuminoid ratio reported per lot
Phospholipid sourceSunflower lecithin as standard (soy-free). Soya lecithin grade on request. No egg-derived phospholipid is used in any grade
Allergen declarationSunflower grade: free of all 14 EU allergens. Soya grade: soya lecithin is NOT exempt under Reg. 1169/2011 Annex II and must be declared as containing soya
Diet and origin statusVegan and vegetarian. Wholly plant-derived: no bovine, porcine, marine, milk, egg or crustacean input at any stage. Non-GMO; IP-certified lecithin on request
Appearance and meshFree-flowing orange-yellow to brownish-yellow powder with a faint lecithin note. 100% through 60 mesh typical; softer and more cohesive than a dry 95% extract
DispersibilityDisperses in warm water to a colloidal suspension; does not form a true solution. Soluble in ethanol. Hygroscopic — keep liners sealed after part use
Loss on drying and residualsLoss on drying NMT 5.0%. Residual solvents within ICH Q3C Class 3 limits, solvent declared per lot. Bulk density typically 0.30–0.50 g/mL
Additive and intake referencesCurcumin E100 / INS 100(i), lecithin E322, cellulose E460(i). JECFA 2004 and EFSA 2010 ADI for curcumin 0–3 mg/kg bw/day — size servings on curcuminoid content
Contaminants and microbiologyLead NMT 3 ppm, arsenic NMT 1 ppm, cadmium NMT 1 ppm, mercury NMT 0.1 ppm. TPC NMT 10,000 cfu/g; yeast and mould NMT 500 cfu/g; pathogens absent
Shelf life and storage24 months from manufacture in sealed original packing. Store below 25 °C in a dry place away from direct light; light- and alkali-sensitive
HS code21069099 — food preparations not elsewhere specified, other. Final classification rests with the importing customs authority
A curcumin phospholipid complex is a delivery-form ingredient, not a higher-strength extract, and it should be bought on that understanding. Turmeric extract from Curcuma longa L. is co-processed with a phosphatidylcholine-rich lecithin so that the curcuminoids associate with the polar head groups of the phospholipid, and the resulting complex is dried onto microcrystalline cellulose. The finished powder assays 18–22% total curcuminoids by HPLC — typically 20% — with the curcuminoids and the phospholipid held at a nominal 1:2 ratio by weight and the cellulose making up the balance. The curcuminoid fraction itself is the usual three-compound family: curcumin (CAS 458-37-7, C21H20O6, MW 368.38), demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. A buyer comparing this against a 95% curcuminoid extract on assay alone is comparing the wrong number; the point of the article is the physical form, and the dose in a finished capsule is set accordingly. The lecithin source is the single most important commercial decision on this record, and it is an allergen decision rather than a technical one. Thovek's standard grade uses sunflower lecithin, which carries no Annex II allergen and lets a brand print a clean soy-free declaration. Soya lecithin is available on request and is materially cheaper, but soya lecithin is not covered by the Annex II exemptions in EU Regulation 1169/2011 — unlike fully refined soybean oil and fat — so any grade built on it must be declared as containing soya, on the ingredient list and on the label. No egg-derived phospholipid is used in any grade, and no bovine, porcine or marine material enters the process, so all grades are vegan and vegetarian. The material is an orange-yellow to brownish-yellow free-flowing powder that disperses in warm water to a colloidal suspension rather than forming a true solution. It carries a substantial phospholipid load, which makes it noticeably softer and more hygroscopic than a dry 95% extract and means it needs a sealed liner and dry storage; blenders should also allow for it in tablet compression work. All three constituents are established food materials — curcumin as E100, lecithin as E322 and microcrystalline cellulose as E460(i) — and the JECFA and EFSA acceptable daily intake for curcumin of 0–3 mg/kg body weight per day is the figure to work back from when sizing a serving. Like all curcumin articles it is light- and alkali-sensitive and should be held below 25 °C away from direct light.

Available grades

Standard complex at 18–22% total curcuminoids (typically 20%) on sunflower lecithin; soya lecithin grade on request at lower cost, with the soya allergen declared. Organic-certified (NOP/EU) grade using organic turmeric extract and organic sunflower lecithin. Granulated grade for direct compression. Non-cellulose grade with an alternative carrier for label-simplification projects, subject to minimum order.

Packaging: 20 kg and 25 kg net in food-grade fibre drums with double LDPE liners, opaque inner liner to protect the curcuminoids from light and a moisture barrier for the phospholipid load. Sample and small-lot packs of 1 kg and 5 kg in aluminium-foil laminate bags. Cartons palletised and shrink-wrapped for sea or air freight. Nitrogen flushing recommended and available on request.
