Coriander Seed Extract

Coriander seed extract is made from the dried ripe fruit of Coriandrum sativum L. (Apiaceae) - the schizocarp traded worldwide as coriander or dhania seed, and the same plant whose fresh leaf is sold as cilantro. Thovek extracts the fruit only; leaf and herb material is a separate article with a different constituent profile and is quoted separately. The seed's volatile fraction is dominated by linalool (CAS 78-70-6, C10H18O, MW 154.25), reported at roughly two thirds of the volatiles, alongside pinene and the aroma aldehydes that carry the familiar warm, sweet-citrus note. The non-volatile fraction carries the flavonoids and phenolic acids on which the standardised grades are set. Two grade families are produced. Native ratio powders at 4:1 and 10:1 (dried fruit to extract) are water or ethanol-water extracts dried onto maize maltodextrin, and suit formulators buying on drug-extract ratio and organoleptics. Flavonoid-standardised grades are set at 2.0% or 5.0% total flavonoids by UV, calculated as quercetin, for buyers who need an assayed marker in the specification and on the label. Both run to 80 mesh at not more than 5.0% loss on drying, and are released against ICP-MS heavy metals, full microbiology, EU MRL pesticide screening and ICH Q3C Class 3 residual solvent limits. Ethanol is the only organic solvent used; methanol is not. Identity is confirmed by HPTLC fingerprint against authenticated fruit, which also rejects spent seed - material already stripped of its oil by distillation and resold as whole spice. Commercially, the entries that matter most are allergen and origin. Coriander is not a declarable allergen under EU Regulation 1169/2011 Annex II or US FDA rules, but it belongs to the Apiaceae, the family that also contains celery, and celery is an EU declarable allergen; buyers shipping into the EU should confirm line segregation, which Thovek states per lot. The material is vegan and vegetarian with no dairy, egg, fish, crustacean, soy or nut input, and the carrier maltodextrin is maize-derived, so the powder is gluten-free. Thovek supplies to specification and makes no health claim; substantiation for any finished-product positioning rests with the brand in its own market.
