Bhumi Amla Extract (Phyllanthus niruri)

Bhumi amla, the Ayurvedic dravya Bhumyamalaki, is the small prostrate herb Phyllanthus niruri L. (Phyllanthaceae, formerly placed in Euphorbiaceae). Thovek supplies the whole-plant extract as a free-flowing powder for supplement and traditional-medicine manufacturers. Buyers should be aware of a genuine taxonomic issue in this trade: much of the Indian commercial material sold as Bhumi amla is the closely allied Phyllanthus amarus Schum. & Thonn., which the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India carries under the same Bhumyamalaki heading. The two are separated in the field mainly by colour, P. amarus being uniformly green while P. niruri shows red pigmentation on stem and petiole, and by leaf and stem size. We authenticate the incoming herb and state the actual species on every certificate of analysis rather than treating the names as interchangeable, because a brand claiming P. niruri on a label needs the botany to hold up. Standardisation is offered on three independent bases so the extract can be matched to whatever a customer's existing specification already uses. Bitters not less than 5.0 percent is the classical gravimetric basis and remains the most widely written spec in Indian and Southeast Asian formulations. Phyllanthin at 1, 2 or 4 percent is the modern HPLC basis, run against a characterised phyllanthin reference standard (CAS 10351-88-9, C24H32O7, MW 432.5); hypophyllanthin (C24H30O7, MW 430.5) is reported alongside it on request. Tannins at 20 percent by titration serves customers formulating on a polyphenol basis. Native concentrates at 4:1 and 10:1 are available where a customer prefers a full-spectrum ratio extract with no marker claim at all. Extraction uses water or food-grade ethanol/water, with residual solvents held to ICH Q3C Class 3 limits. The material is wholly plant-derived and therefore vegan and vegetarian, with no milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, gluten, peanut or tree-nut inputs anywhere in the process; it is non-GMO and non-irradiated, and carriers are declared where a spray-dried grade is used. Incoming herb is accepted against the API criteria for Bhumyamalaki — foreign matter not more than 2 percent, total ash not more than 14 percent, acid-insoluble ash not more than 5 percent, alcohol-soluble extractive not less than 6 percent and water-soluble extractive not less than 8 percent — with every lot tested for heavy metals, pesticide residues and microbiology.
