The garlic side is an extract of Allium sativum L. (Amaryllidaceae) dried bulb, and its chemistry is the reason the label wording matters. The intact clove stores alliin, S-allyl-L-cysteine sulphoxide, CAS 556-27-4, C6H11NO3S, MW 177.22. When cell walls are ruptured the enzyme alliinase (alliin lyase, EC 4.4.1.4) converts it to allicin, diallyl thiosulphinate, CAS 539-86-6, C6H10OS2, MW 162.3. Allicin is not stable in a dry powder, so a garlic extract is not standardised on allicin content but on allicin yield, sometimes called allicin potential: the maximum allicin that retained alliin and retained alliinase will generate under the assay conditions. ESCOP's working conversion is that 1 mg of alliin corresponds to 0.45 mg of allicin, crushed fresh cloves yield roughly 2.5 to 4.5 mg allicin per gram of fresh weight, and published surveys of commercial products found allicin potentials ranging from 0.64 to 4.64 g/kg between brands and between lots of the same brand - which is precisely why the assay method and the release profile belong on the purchase order. For reference, the USP powdered garlic standard requires not less than 0.3% alliin and not less than 0.1% gamma-glutamyl-S-allyl-L-cysteine on a dry-weight basis. The arjuna side is the stem bark of Terminalia arjuna (Roxb. ex DC.) Wight & Arn. (Combretaceae) - the plant part the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India defines for Arjuna, with root bark and mixed bark not accepted. The analytical marker is arjunolic acid, CAS 465-00-9, C30H48O5, MW 488.7, systematically 2alpha,3beta,23-trihydroxyolean-12-en-28-oic acid, a pentacyclic triterpenoid that travels with arjunic acid, arjungenin, gallic acid, ellagic acid, casuarinin and beta-sitosterol in the same fraction. Grades are offered standardised on arjunolic acid by HPLC at 0.5%, 1% or 2%, or on tannins by titration; the two numbers are not comparable, and gravimetric total-saponin figures read far higher than HPLC, so the method must be named. Bark of Terminalia alata and T. tomentosa is a documented substitute for arjuna, so species-level identity by HPTLC fingerprint or DNA is worth specifying rather than relying on organoleptic checks. As a finished capsule the pairing raises three practical points. First, alliinase is acid-labile, so an allicin-yield garlic is conventionally enteric coated or filled into a delayed-release capsule if the declared yield is meant to survive gastric acid; a plain immediate-release shell is a legitimate build but should not carry an allicin-yield claim without that context. Second, arjuna tannins bind protein and complex iron and other metal ions, so combining this capsule with a mineral premix or a protein matrix needs a compatibility trial rather than an assumption. Third, this is a blend, not a single active: each extract is assayed on its own marker and blend uniformity is verified, and the two are never merged into a single proprietary total. With the vegetarian HPMC shell the unit is vegan and vegetarian, with no milk, egg, fish, crustacean, soy, gluten, peanut, tree nut, sesame, celery or mustard input; garlic sensitivity is documented but Allium is not a regulated major allergen in the EU, US or Indian lists.
