Citrulline Malate is the salt formed between L-citrulline (CAS 372-75-8) and DL-malic acid (CAS 617-48-1, malic acid generally registered as 6915-15-7), most commonly listed under CAS 54940-97-5 and also cited as 70796-17-7. Two stoichiometries are traded and they are not interchangeable. The 2:1 grade, two molecules of citrulline to one of malate, has the formula C16H32N6O11 and a molecular weight of 484.47, giving a calculated 72.3% L-citrulline and 27.7% malate. The 1:1 grade is C10H19N3O8 at molecular weight 309.27, giving 56.6% L-citrulline. Buyers should state the ratio on every enquiry, since label declaration, dosing and effective cost per gram of citrulline all follow from it; unless otherwise agreed, Thovek quotes the 2:1 grade as standard. The malate counter-ion is not inert filler. Malic acid is an intermediate of the tricarboxylic acid cycle and a well-established food acidulant, and its presence shifts the salt to a mildly acidic, tart solution rather than the near-neutral profile of citrulline base. That behaviour suits pre-workout powders, effervescent tablets and ready-to-drink sports beverages, where the acidity works with the flavour system instead of against it. The salt is more hygroscopic than free citrulline, so blend rooms should be humidity-controlled and part-used bags resealed promptly. No pharmacopoeial monograph exists for citrulline malate. Thovek supplies it against an FCC-style food and nutraceutical specification with total assay of not less than 98.0% on the dried basis, loss on drying not more than 1.0%, sulphated ash not more than 0.1% and heavy metals not more than 10 ppm as lead. The citrulline-to-malate ratio is verified by HPLC on every lot and stated on the certificate of analysis alongside identity, related amino acids, residual solvents, heavy metals and microbiological limits.
