A premix built to exactly its label claim will fail that claim before the product reaches the shelf. Overage is not padding; it is the difference between a specification and a finished product that still meets it at the end of shelf life.

What an overage is compensating for

Vitamins degrade from the moment they are blended. The rate depends on the vitamin, the carrier, the moisture in the blend, the packaging and the climate the product will sit in. An overage is a calculated allowance for that loss, set so the product still assays at or above its claim on the last day of its stated shelf life.

Typical drivers of loss, in rough order of how much trouble they cause:

  • Moisture — the single biggest factor for most water-soluble vitamins. A blend that picks up moisture in transit will lose potency faster than any stability study predicted.
  • Minerals in the same blend — reactive metal ions, particularly iron and copper, accelerate degradation of vitamins C, A and folate.
  • Heat and time in transit — a container crossing the equator is a stability test nobody planned for.
  • Processing — tableting pressure and any wet granulation step take their own share.

Why the number varies so widely

Overages of 10% to 50% are all defensible depending on the vitamin. Vitamin C and folate typically carry the largest; niacinamide and most minerals are comparatively stable and need little. There is no single correct figure, which is exactly why it should not be left implied.

The mistake we see most often is a buyer comparing two premix quotes without knowing whether the overages behind them match. The cheaper one is sometimes simply dosed closer to the claim, which moves the risk onto the buyer without moving the price.

What to put in writing

Agree these before the first batch, not after a failed retain sample:

  • Label claim per serving and the serving size it applies to.
  • Overage per vitamin, stated as a percentage, not a blanket figure across the blend.
  • The shelf life the overage is designed to hold — 24 months in a temperate warehouse is a different formula from 24 months in the Gulf.
  • Assay method per vitamin, so acceptance testing does not become a dispute about methodology.
  • Whether the CoA reports the assayed value or the label claim. These are not the same number and the difference matters when you are reconciling batches.

The practical check

Ask a prospective supplier for stability data on a comparable blend in comparable packaging, and ask what overage produced it. A supplier who has the data will send it. A supplier who quotes an overage without any stability work behind it is guessing, and the guess is being underwritten by your shelf life.
