Every vitamin premix is dosed above its label claim. How much above is a decision with cost, stability and compliance riding on it — and it belongs in writing before production.
An athlete is responsible for everything in their body, whatever the label said. That principle pushes an unusual burden back up the supply chain, and ingredient suppliers who understand it are easier to sell to sports brands.
Nobody reputable is adding prohibited substances deliberately. The realistic risk is trace carryover — shared equipment, shared facilities, a raw material that passed through a site also handling prohormones or stimulants. The quantities involved are far below anything that would affect a product's performance, and far above the threshold that produces an adverse finding in an athlete's sample.
This is why routine QC misses it. Standard testing looks for the specification's own parameters. It does not screen for several hundred unrelated compounds at nanogram levels.
Botanical extracts and pre-workout ingredients draw the closest attention, because plant materials have historically been where undeclared stimulant analogues turn up. Amino acids, creatine and protein carry lower inherent risk but are shipped in the largest volumes, so a contamination event has the widest reach.
Batch screening costs money and takes time, and it should be quoted as what it is — a per-batch cost, not a certificate the supplier holds. A supplier who claims to be "Informed Sport certified" as a blanket status has misunderstood the programme, and that misunderstanding is itself informative.
If you supply into this segment, agree three things in the contract: who pays for screening, what the lead time is with screening included, and what happens to a batch that fails. Sorting that out in advance is considerably cheaper than sorting it out during a recall.
