Most botanical powders carry a stated shelf life of around 24 months. That figure assumes storage conditions — and those assumptions are where real-world quality problems begin.

What actually degrades

  • Moisture uptake — powders are hygroscopic. Absorbed moisture drives caking and microbiological growth.
  • Heat — accelerates degradation of heat-sensitive actives and colour.
  • Light — particularly damaging to pigmented materials such as curcumin and moringa.
  • Oxygen — oxidation dulls colour and can affect sensitive constituents over time.

Packaging that does the job

Standard bulk export packing for botanical powders is a multi-layer paper or HDPE bag with an inner liner, palletised and wrapped. The liner is not a formality — it is the moisture barrier that makes the stated shelf life achievable.

For sensitive or high-value extracts, fibre drums with double liners provide better protection and handle better in humid conditions.

Storage conditions to write down

Specify cool, dry, out of direct sunlight, off the floor, and away from strong odours — botanical powders pick up ambient smells readily. If your warehouse is not climate controlled, factor seasonal humidity into how much you hold and how long.

Retest dates versus expiry

Shelf life is not a cliff edge. Many buyers operate a retest policy: material approaching the end of its stated life is re-analysed against release specifications rather than automatically discarded. For expensive extracts, that is often the economically sensible approach — provided your quality system documents it.

Order to your turnover

The cheapest per-kilo price on a quantity you cannot consume within its shelf life is not a saving. Align order sizes with realistic usage, and use scheduled deliveries against a blanket order where a supplier can offer them.
