Extract ratios appear on countless specifications and look reassuringly precise. They describe how much raw material went into the process — not how much of anything useful came out.

What the ratio states

A 10:1 extract means ten parts of raw botanical were used to produce one part of finished extract, by weight. It is a statement about concentration of input, and nothing more.

Two 10:1 extracts made from different plant parts, by different solvents, at different temperatures, can differ substantially in composition and in performance.

Why ratios are hard to verify

There is no analytical test that reads a ratio off a finished extract. It is a process claim, verifiable only through manufacturing records. An assay, by contrast, is measurable in any competent laboratory.

This is the practical reason to prefer standardized specifications where they exist: you can test what you bought.

Carriers change the arithmetic

Many extracts include a carrier — maltodextrin, rice flour or similar — to aid flow and standardize potency. A carrier is legitimate and often necessary, but it dilutes the extract, and a ratio quoted before the carrier is added does not describe the material in the bag.

Ask whether the stated ratio is before or after carrier addition, and what percentage of carrier is present.

When ratios are genuinely useful

  • For botanicals with no established marker compound, where standardization is not possible.
  • As supporting information alongside an assay, giving a fuller picture of the material.
  • In traditional-use products where whole-plant character is the point.

What to put on the specification

Where a marker exists, lead with the assay and the method. Include the ratio, the plant part, the extraction solvent and the carrier content as supporting parameters. That combination describes a material precisely enough for two suppliers to quote the same thing.
