Pyridoxine hydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt of pyridoxine, the alcohol vitamer of vitamin B6 and the form most widely used in bulk supplement, food-fortification and pharmaceutical manufacture. Thovek supplies it as a white to almost white crystalline powder, CAS 58-56-0, molecular formula C8H11NO3·HCl (MW 205.64), assaying 98.0-102.0 % on the dried basis to USP and 99.0-101.0 % to Ph. Eur./BP. The salt corresponds to roughly 82.3 % pyridoxine base by weight, and its chloride content of 16.9-17.6 % on the dried basis is one of the routine identity checks in the monograph. Pyridoxine is converted in vivo to pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, the coenzyme required by transaminases, decarboxylases and glycogen phosphorylase, and it therefore takes part in normal amino-acid and glycogen metabolism. For formulators the practical points are its high aqueous solubility (about 220 g/L at 20 °C), the acidic pH of 2.4-3.0 in a 5 % w/v solution, and its sensitivity to light, which is why the material is packed and stored in light-resistant containers. It melts with decomposition at about 205-212 °C, so it holds up through normal drying, granulation, tabletting and extrusion operations. Grades are available to USP, BP/Ph. Eur., IP and FCC food specifications, in standard crystalline and finer milled particle sizes for direct-compression and dry-blend work. Each lot ships with a certificate of analysis covering assay, appearance, identification, pH, loss on drying (max 0.5 %), residue on ignition or sulphated ash (max 0.1 %), related substances and heavy metals (max 0.003 % as Pb), supported by MSDS, TSE/BSE and allergen statements, non-GMO declaration, and Halal/Kosher documentation on request.
