Calcium pantothenate is the calcium salt of D-pantothenic acid and the commercially standard, most stable delivery form of vitamin B5. Thovek supplies the dextrorotatory (D-) grade, CAS 137-08-6, molecular formula C18H32CaN2O10 (MW 476.53), as a white to almost white free-flowing powder assaying 98.0-101.0 % on the dried basis to Ph. Eur./BP and 98.0-102.0 % to USP. One gram of the salt corresponds to approximately 0.92 g of pantothenic acid and carries 8.2-8.6 % elemental calcium, which allows straightforward overage and label calculations at the formulation stage. The racemic DL-form (CAS 6381-63-1) is available separately for feed applications. Pantothenic acid is the biosynthetic precursor of coenzyme A and of the phosphopantetheine group of acyl carrier protein, and in that role it participates in the normal metabolism of carbohydrate, fat and protein. In manufacturing terms the salt is freely soluble in water and only slightly soluble in ethanol, which suits it to direct-compression tablet blends, hard-shell capsules, effervescent granules, stick packs, clear beverages and liquid premixes. The powder is slightly hygroscopic and mildly alkaline in solution, so blending is normally carried out under controlled humidity and the salt is kept away from strongly acidic excipients in wet processes. Every consignment is released against a batch certificate of analysis covering assay by potentiometric titration, specific optical rotation (+25.0° to +27.5°), loss on drying, calcium and nitrogen content, and heavy metals, with microbiological and residual solvent testing available to buyer specification. Material is offered in USP, BP, Ph.
