Tocotrienols are the unsaturated arm of the vitamin E family. They share the chromanol head group of the tocopherols but carry a farnesyl side chain with three double bonds in place of the saturated phytyl tail, which changes both their physical behaviour in lipid systems and their commercial positioning. Four homologues occur naturally: alpha-tocotrienol (CAS 1721-51-3, C29H44O2, MW 424.66), beta-tocotrienol (CAS 490-23-3, C28H42O2, MW 410.63), gamma-tocotrienol (CAS 14101-61-2, C28H42O2, MW 410.63) and delta-tocotrienol (CAS 25612-59-3, C27H40O2, MW 396.60). Commercially the material is traded as a tocotrienol-rich fraction, or TRF, rather than as isolated isomers.
Thovek sources TRF from two distinct botanical routes. Palm-derived TRF, recovered from the fruit of Elaeis guineensis, carries tocotrienols at roughly 70 to 75 per cent of total vitamin E with alpha-tocopherol making up the remaining 25 to 30 per cent; within palm vitamin E the typical split is around 22 per cent alpha-tocotrienol, 46 per cent gamma-tocotrienol and 12 per cent delta-tocotrienol. Annatto-derived TRF, from the seed of Bixa orellana, is the only commercial source that is essentially tocopherol-free, and is standardised to approximately 90 per cent delta-tocotrienol with 10 per cent gamma-tocotrienol. Rice bran distillate is a third source with a profile closer to palm. Grades are offered from 20 per cent through 30, 50 and 70 per cent to 90 per cent total tocotrienols, as clear oil for softgel fill and as spray-dried or oil-adsorbed powders where a dry premix is required. Like the tocopherols, tocotrienols function as fat-soluble chain-breaking antioxidants that protect unsaturated lipids from oxidation.
Analysis is by normal-phase HPLC with fluorescence detection, which separates and quantifies each of the four tocotrienol homologues and any co-present tocopherols, and every lot is released with the full isomer breakdown rather than a single total figure. Certificates also cover appearance, colour, acid value, peroxide value, residual solvent, heavy metals and microbiology. Because the trienoic side chain is oxidation-sensitive, material is filled under nitrogen into light-excluding containers and is best stored cool. Buyers requiring finished delivery formats should note that bulk oil and powder are the ingredient positions; filled softgel capsules are a finished dosage form and classify separately for customs purposes.
