Phosphatidylserine capsules

Phosphatidylserine capsules

Finished hard capsule · phosphatidyl-L-serine from soy or sunflower lecithin, 20% / 50% / 70% PS

Finished hard capsule of phosphatidyl-L-serine (PS) made by enzymatic conversion of soy or sunflower lecithin, at 20%, 50% or 70% PS. Vegan HPMC shell, bovine-free; soy grades declare soy.

Specifications

FormatFinished hard capsule, size 0 or 00. Per-capsule PS loading is set to the buyer's label and confirmed on a pre-production sample before the production run.
Active identityPhosphatidyl-L-serine (PS, Ptd-L-Ser), an acidic glycerophospholipid. CAS 51446-62-9 as quoted in trade; PubChem CID 9547096, reference species C42H82NO10P, 792.1 g/mol.
Standardisation and assay20%, 50% or 70% PS on the concentrate. Assay by HPLC with ELSD or by 31P NMR; state the method on the specification, results are not interchangeable.
Source and manufacturePhospholipase D, typically from Streptomyces sp., transphosphatidylates lecithin phosphatidylcholine with L-serine as co-substrate; the concentrate is then standardised.
Feedstock economicsNative PS is roughly 3% of total phospholipids in soy lecithin, so enrichment is enzymatic rather than by simple fractionation. This drives the price ladder across grades.
Bovine-free declarationNo bovine cerebral cortex material is used or offered. The original bovine source was abandoned over BSE transmission risk. Capsule is BSE/TSE-free by construction.
Capsule shellHPMC (hypromellose) as standard: vegan, no bovine or porcine input, halal and kosher compatible. Bovine gelatin on request, which ends the vegan claim.
Appearance and solubilityLight yellow to yellow-brown free-flowing powder in the concentrate, characteristic lecithin odour. Dispersible in water, soluble in chloroform-methanol systems.
Oxidative stabilityPolyunsaturated fatty acyl chains oxidise. Peroxide value and acid value held on every lot; nitrogen blanketing of bulk and in-pack oxygen scavengers available.
Purity limitsResidual solvents to USP <467>; elemental impurities to USP <2232> dietary supplement limits; hexane and ethanol residues reported on the certificate of analysis.
MicrobiologyTotal plate count, yeast and mould, plus absence of E. coli, Salmonella and S. aureus, tested to USP <2021>/<2022> dietary supplement criteria on every lot.
Allergen and dietary statusSoy-lecithin grades are a declarable soy allergen in the EU, US and most markets. Sunflower-lecithin grades are soy-free. Vegan, non-GMO on request, BSE/TSE-free.
Shelf life and storage24 months from manufacture in sealed original packaging. Store below 25 C, dry and dark, away from oxygen; reseal immediately after opening.
HS code (India ITC-HS)21069099 - food preparations not elsewhere specified or included: other. Final classification rests with the importing customs authority.
A finished hard capsule carrying phosphatidyl-L-serine, the acidic glycerophospholipid abbreviated PS or Ptd-L-Ser. It is a class of molecules rather than one compound: L-serine is esterified to the phosphate of a 1,2-diacyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphate backbone, and the two fatty acids vary with the source lecithin, so commercial PS is always a mixture of molecular species. CAS 51446-62-9 is the number normally quoted on trade paperwork for phosphatidyl-L-serine and is carried as a synonym on PubChem CID 9547096, where the reference species is the distearoyl form, C42H82NO10P, 792.1 g/mol. That single formula does not describe a commercial lot, which is why the contract should be written on the PS assay percentage and the analytical method rather than on the CAS. Origin is the commercial fault line on this ingredient. Phosphatidylserine was originally isolated from bovine cerebral cortex, and that source was abandoned over the risk of transmitting bovine spongiform encephalopathy. Thovek does not offer bovine-cortex material and this capsule is BSE/TSE-free by construction. Current material is made enzymatically: phospholipase D, typically from a Streptomyces species, catalyses transphosphatidylation of soybean phosphatidylcholine with L-serine as co-substrate, converting abundant lecithin PC into a PS-enriched concentrate that is then standardised. The conversion route exists because native PS is scarce in the feedstock, running at roughly 3% of total phospholipids in soy lecithin. Soy lecithin is the default substrate, which makes a soy allergen declaration mandatory unless you specify the sunflower-lecithin route; sunflower PS is the soy-free option and prices above soy. Both are plant-derived and vegan on the standard HPMC shell. Traded as 20%, 50% and 70% PS concentrates, with the balance made up of the other lecithin phospholipids and carrier, so a 20% capsule and a 50% capsule are not interchangeable at the same fill weight and the label must declare PS content rather than concentrate weight. PS carries polyunsaturated fatty acids and oxidises, so hold peroxide value and acid value on every lot, use a nitrogen blanket where the buyer's specification calls for it, and store cool, dry and dark. Lots are released against HPLC-ELSD or 31P NMR assay, USP <467> residual solvents, USP <2232> elemental impurities and USP <2021>/<2022> microbial limits. On copy, describe composition and phospholipid nutrition only. The US qualified health claim language associated with phosphatidylserine is disease-related and Thovek does not supply it as label text; and do not name or imply equivalence to any branded PS article, which would require a licence from the trademark owner.

Available grades

Vegan HPMC shell as standard with bovine gelatin on request; size 0 and size 00 fills; 20%, 50% and 70% PS concentrates; soy-lecithin grades and sunflower-lecithin (soy-free) grades; non-GMO identity-preserved soy on request; nitrogen-flushed and oxygen-scavenged packing; alu-alu blister for humid markets; and combination fills with DHA-rich algal oil powder, Ginkgo biloba extract or standardised Bacopa monnieri extract on the buyer's own formula sheet. Bovine-cortex material is not offered in any grade.

Packaging: Bulk capsules in double food-grade LDPE liners inside 25 kg fibre drums or HDPE kegs with desiccant, typically 25,000 to 50,000 capsules per drum depending on shell size and fill weight. Because the phospholipid load is oxidation-sensitive, liners are heat-sealed and a nitrogen headspace flush is offered as standard on the 50% and 70% grades. Finished bottling into 30s, 60s, 90s or 120s HDPE jars with induction seal, tamper band and an oxygen-scavenger or desiccant canister, plus alu-alu blister packs, available under a private-label agreement with the buyer's own artwork, batch coding and market-specific label and allergen text.
