Magnesium bisglycinate - also written magnesium diglycinate or magnesium glycinate, and formally bis(glycinato-N,O)magnesium - is the chelate formed between one magnesium ion and two molecules of the amino acid glycine. CAS 14783-68-7, molecular formula C4H8MgN2O4, molecular weight 172.42 g/mol. The fully reacted anhydrous chelate carries 14.1% elemental magnesium by theory, which is the number a formulator has to work back from when sizing a dose: it sits well below magnesium oxide (60.3% Mg) and magnesium chloride (25.5%) but above citrate (11.3%), threonate (8.3%) and taurate (8.9%), and close to malate (15.5%). Measured aqueous solubility at room temperature is 1.36 g per 100 mL with a pKa of 2.34, so it is sparingly soluble rather than freely soluble and behaves as a weak acid in solution. Origin is the declaration that matters commercially on this article. Glycine can be manufactured synthetically or obtained by hydrolysis of animal collagen, and a gelatin-derived route would break a vegan claim on the finished pack. Thovek supplies material made with glycine of non-animal manufacture, and the certificate of analysis states the glycine route so a brand can support a vegan or vegetarian declaration with documentation rather than assumption; buyers should check that line on every lot rather than relying on a one-off statement. The chelate contains no bovine, porcine or marine input, and no milk, egg, soy, fish, crustacean, gluten, peanut or tree nut material is used in manufacture. In the European Union, "magnesium bisglycinate" is named in Annex II of Directive 2002/46/EC as amended by Regulation (EC) No 1170/2009, so it is a permitted mineral source for food supplements there; other markets set their own positive lists and the brand owner remains responsible for confirming permitted use in the country of sale. Two grades are offered. Standard powder is intended for capsule filling and dry blending, and a direct-compression granular grade is available for tabletting where flow and compaction matter more than fineness; mesh cuts are set to buyer specification. Buffered material blended with magnesium oxide to raise the apparent magnesium percentage can be made to order, but it is a mixture and not the pure chelate, and it is specified, labelled and classified separately - a point worth settling before purchase orders are raised, because the two are frequently confused in tender documents. Magnesium is an essential dietary mineral; permitted nutrient-function wording differs by market and is the brand owner's responsibility.

Available grades

Powder grade (standard mesh) for capsule filling and dry blending, and direct-compression granular grade for tabletting; mesh cuts to buyer specification. Also offered as finished HPMC capsules. Buffered blends with magnesium oxide can be made to order but are mixtures, not the pure chelate, and are specified, labelled and classified separately.
