Citicoline (CDP-Choline)

Citicoline, or cytidine 5'-diphosphocholine, is a discrete chemically defined nucleotide: CAS 987-78-0, molecular formula C14H26N4O11P2, molecular weight 488.32, EINECS 213-580-7. It is the intermediate that carries the phosphocholine group in the Kennedy pathway, the route by which cells assemble phosphatidylcholine, and it occurs naturally in human and animal tissue. Thovek supplies both the free base and the sodium salt (CAS 33818-15-4, C14H25N4NaO11P2, MW 510.31). State which one you need at enquiry stage, because the salt carries a different molecular weight and your quantitative label declaration has to reflect it. Material is produced by microbial fermentation with enzymatic conversion rather than by extraction, so it is vegan and vegetarian with no bovine, porcine, marine or egg input. This matters commercially: choline ingredients are widely assumed to be soy-derived, and this one is not — it carries no soy lecithin and needs no soy declaration. It is likewise free from milk, fish, crustacean, gluten, peanut and tree nut. Assay is 98.0-102.0% on the anhydrous basis by HPLC. The powder is white to off-white, odourless, freely soluble in water and distinctly hygroscopic, so drums are double PE-lined and should be resealed immediately after sampling and dispensed in a humidity-controlled area. For EU business, citicoline is an authorised novel food on the Union list of Regulation (EU) 2017/2470: up to 500 mg/day in food supplements under Directive 2002/46/EC, and 250 mg per serving to a maximum of 1000 mg/day in foods for special medical purposes under Regulation (EU) No 609/2013. The label must designate the ingredient as 'Citicoline' and must state that the product is not intended to be consumed by children.
